The USS Intrepid was towed to its home at Pier 86 in Manhattan from Staten Island yesterday after being moved to undergo almost $120 million worth of repairs and improvements. The interior of the ship has been completely renovated.

USS Intrepid

The World War II-era aircraft carrier made its way through New York Harbor, passing the World Trade Center site and the Statue of Liberty along the way. 400 guests and former crew members attended while hundreds of New Yorkers greeted the ship with waving American flags along the west side of Manhattan.

The Intrepid had served as a sea, air and space museum for 24 years at its Manhattan dock before it sailed away in December 2006 for an overhaul. The Intrepid floating museum is scheduled to reopen on November 8th. The Intrepid is also a unique venue available to host events.

Curious.  What does one do to "improve" a piece of history?  I hope it doesn't include the usual audio-vidial shows in the galley.

Maintenance of systems is understandable, but often these refurbrishings simply destroy the ambiance of the original.

Reminds me of a 1700 Victorian home with a flat screen TV in the fireplace.

Lenn, I've been in the ship many times before the restoration and it certainly is a piece of history. I will let you know after I see it. You might be right they may have turned it into more of a Museum.

According to their website:

The NEW Intrepid Museum opens its doors to the public for the first time after a 2-year renovation project which included new exhibit installations, restored aircraft, a new public park-like pier, new interactive exhibits, dry-docking and a new paint job for the former USS Intrepid.

Mitchell, I remember my father taking me for a tour of the Intrepid many years ago.  It was a very memorable experience.  Better than that was when I spent 3 days on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier and got to be catapulted off in an airplane during a field trip for a college seminar.

Kathy, I've been to a few parties on the Intrepid it's huge. Several years ago I attended a big party on the Intrepid Memorial Day weekend.  It was fleet week they had dinner and dancing on the deck it was a really spectacular event.  Host an Event.

Brian, Wow - Catapulted off an airplane from an aircraft carrier that is an experience you wil never forget.

The new interactive museum is a big success. My friend took her 5 year old boy and some of his friends to the Intrepid at my suggestion and she told me they had a great day, the kids loved it.

Great blog Mitchell.
