The benefit to moving to Northwest Indiana isn't only low taxes! Northwest Indiana has sooo much to offer! I thought I would compilate a small list below:
- Apple Pickin' and Corn Mazes! County Line Orchard, in Hobart offers about 20 different varieties of apples in U-Pick style. There is also a corn maze, pumpkin pickin', a kid's farm, bee hive area, and picnic area. Their store offers fresh made selections, including the best apple donuts around!!
- Indiana Dunes State Park: There is nothing I love more than a day at the Dunes! Mt. Baldy, the largest living (moving) dune in Indiana at 126 ft high, is my favorite spot to sit and take in beautiful Lake Michigan. Pack up your lunch (with some yummy apples), get on your hiking shoes, and discover what so many people in our area take for granted. This is the best time of year to "get lost" in nature.
- Entertainment: Northwest Indiana is home to several casinos where you can try your luck at poker, blackjack, roulette, and slots. Recently remodled and expanded Horseshoe casino also now has a large entertainment venue (as well as Ameristar and Majestic Star casinos) where many nationally known acts are scheduled to appear. Star Plaza in Merrillville offers a theatre with many different shows and dining options also. Hotel accomodations are available at each place for late nights, too.
- Explore a working farm: My boyfriend and I headed to Fair Oaks Farms, located off I-65 in Fair Oaks to see a cow be born. Although we were early, and no cow was in labor, we had a blast trying a range of award winning cheeses, dining at their cafe, treating ourselves to ice cream, touring the moooseum, and watching workers making cheese. Not a full day trip, but definately a couple of hours worth of fun and eating!
- Waterslides: On a hot summer day, a lazy river is the key, in my book, to happiness. Deep River Waterpark in Merrillville offers a wave pool, tons of slides, kiddie fun area, and a snack area for treats. Winter time is opened up for ice skating.
- Farmers Markets: Schererville, Chesterton, Valparaiso, St. John, Crown Point, and Highland are just some of the towns that offer up Farmer's Markets on various days of the summer and early autumn for local produce, honey, meats, treats, and handmade crafts. A great opportunity to sample quality local goods and meet your neighbors!
- Quality, Four Star Schools: The Indiana Department of Education classifies a four star school as those public schools who meet AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) under NCLB (No Child Left Behind) and were in the top 25% of all Indiana Public Schools in four categories (attendance, mathematics proficiency, language proficiency, and combined language and mathematics proficiency)
- Close to Chicago: Depending on where you are in Northwest Indiana, Chicago is only a hop, skip, and jump away from major expressways.
- Four Seasons of Nature: Here, in Northwest Indiana, we experience all four seasons. Yes, we get snow. Yes, we get heat and even humid days. The plus: its nice to see the leaves change colors and accentuate an already beautiful fall day.
