POLL: Are You For or Against Dog Limit Laws?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Real Estate Shows

Shelter DogI had a post a while back about the dog limit law in Hurricane.  I got a little fired up about the subject and I ranted a bit.

I not only posted to my blog,  I also sent that entry out in the form of a newsletter to my clients, friends and family who were close enough to be affected by the law.   For the first time ever, I had more views on a newsletter than times it was sent out!  In other words, it was forwarded many times.  I realized I wasn't the only one fired up.

Last week I got a call from a reporter at one of our local papers.  She said she enjoyed my blog and found one entry she'd like to write about.  I told her I already knew which one, and I was right!  I let her interview me right then on the phone and she told me she'll send me a link to the story so I can share it with you here.  I'm glad this story isn't going away.

Today I read a post by Jeff Turner, who has quickly become a go-to guy for cool gadgets and the newest tech toys.  He posted a poll, and it took me all of three seconds to realize I needed to poll about the dog law.

Am I the only one still fired up?  I doubt it.  But I also don't know how others really feel about the issue.

The law simply says that if you live within the city limits of Hurricane, West Virginia, you may have up to two dogs.  Any more than that and you need a kennel license, which the city manager tells me they will not issue.  I asked him about this, explained that I was a Realtor and that I move people into Hurricane all the time, what do I do if they have more than two dogs.  He told me flat out, tell them to reduce their number of dogs or do not move to Hurricane.

BOOM, that was it, there was my fire.  The reporter asked me what I would do instead.

I would prefer to have a law enforced on a case by case basis.  If you have five dogs, but you have the land needed, you provide well for them, they are clean and happy and well fed, and they come inside with you at night and do not keep your neighbors awake, then I am thrilled for your happy dog family.  I'm sure many of you can think of examples in which only one dog was a problem, or was not cared for as it should have been.

Case by case is my plea.

It also bothers me that this is a city-wide ban.  I would prefer to let neighborhoods decide for themselves.  If you live off by yourself someplace and your dogs don't bother anyone else, I think the number you choose to have is your own business.

<CLICK HERE> to take part in the poll.  All I'm asking is what do you think about the issue.  Are you for it?  Against it?

And as this is an internet poll, I don't care if you actually live within Hurricane or not.  Vote either way.  If you appreciate the law don't worry about hurting my feelings, I'm looking for the truth.

Hi, Bob!  Thanks for the photo of Benny!  How SWEET!!  You have a very serious point next to that happy looking dog.  It does matter that people care for their pets, regardless of their number.  The examples you use of people who hoard animals, well that's a problem on a whole 'nother scale, isn't it!  And I don't have a clue what to do about things like that.  But for the people who can take care of three dogs, I'd like to help them have them.

I understand why they have these laws as there are many animal horders in the Twin Cities. But some common sense should apply. Two dogs and no options does not seem right either. Most MN communities allow permits for additional animals over the limit. I think your Hurricane law is excessive.

Sarah, we still live in a free country , don't we?   I think it is up to the individual families, but if things go wrong, and if pets are mistreated there should be still penalties.  Sorry just my opinion, I have one dog, she thinks she is human, and one cat, he too thinks he is human.  I do not need nor want any more for now.  LOL

Sarah, I agree people should be allowed to choose how many animals they want as long as it doesn't interfere with others... Actually DOGS is the subject of my Tee'd Off Tuesday blog..

Hi, Sarah!  You know I am a pet lover.  I voted and it seems most people are in agreement with me that your town's law is hogwash.  At one point I had 4 dogs on 1 1/4 acres of land.  Limits are fine, well and good, if done properly.  Why strictly 2 dogs - period?  Why not restrict # of dogs to amount of land, as they do here with livestock?  And, why are they not issuing kennel licenses?  What do you do if you decide to breed your dog?

Teri - Excessive?  Yeeeeeees.  Thank you for pointing it out!

Bob - I'd like to leave it up to the families, too.

Dan - That's the trick to it, you have to "not bother others", but as long as you can do that what's the problem?  I'll have to go check out your post!

Michelle - I wish they would explain why they aren't offering kennel licenses.  There doesn't seem to be any reason, just "we aren't".

As the owner of two wonderful Huskies (who are both sleeping ON my feet right now) I'm all for a limit of sorts.  I have to qualify that.

Personally,we think of ourselves as "end users".  We buy from only reputable breeders who's business model is not unlike many of ours here - not making the fast buck but instead working to improve the breed. Our dogs are always spayed or neutered ASAP.  Heck, even the bunnies are fixed!  But back to the dogs.  We have always had two Huskies or so. I say "so" because as they get older, one may pass on before the other.  6 years ago, with a healthy 12 year old female we decided to go out and "just look".  After a 5 hour drive to a great breeder in the countryside, we found the cutest brother and sister pups!

Out of the whole litter, these two were obviously bonded to each other (probably starting from the womb).  We just had to have them!  For the better part of a year we had three dogs.  Getting the pups was perfect.  Our elderly girl took to them instantly and even started acting like a puppy again!

We are part of the Husky Rescue Program, Volunteer at ARF, and general dog lovers anyway.

Speaking of which, I'm also against unscrupulous mortgage broker breeding programs. Those "loan officer puppy mills" got out of control!  Somebody needs to stop them!

Sarah I voted in your poll. I was fired up with you when you posted the original post. Congrats on getting interviewed. I am glad that the story is not going away. Perhaps with enough local noise, there will be an ammendment to the law. Hmm.

I just voted too!

How about an option limiting the number of Un spayed or Un neutered dogs ONLY?

The laws as you state are not friendly to dog lovers even like myself.

Debi - We're working on it!  Thanks for following the story, I hope it's got some of our local voters making some noise, too.

Thanks for voting, Mike!  And oooooh, your idea is INTERESTING!!!  I like that very much ...   Hmmmm.

Danny - Little One and I watched that doggie on the Today show yesterday morning!  What a good story!!

Sarah- I just found this old post of yours and my first reaction is - ARE YOU KIDDING ME???    Seriously, I can't imagine such a thing.   I only have one dog, my faithful Golden Retriever.   I'd have three more if they would all fit in the bed!!    I live on the Coast of Maine and we have had several dog hatting committees try to ban dogs from the beaches.   I know some people are not as responsible as they should be and don't always clean up after their dogs.  Shame on them.  But I find they are few and far between.   Most dog owner's are responsible.   I support keeping dogs off the beach during the day in the summer hile families want to enjoy the sun surf, but the rest of the time, dogs like to swim  cool off too!

But to limit the number of dogs you can own is darn outright ridiculous!

What next, like China you can only have two children as well?    What after that, only two cars?   It's a slippery slope.

Your point that all it takes is one dog to be neglected, or keep the neighbors awake at night..... so whether you have one dog or a dozen,  if you are irresponsible you need to be held accountable!

Anyway, I guess you can see where I stand on this subject.

Best of Luck to you!

That law is ridiculous!  How ironic that I took professional dog training in WV (it seemed so dog friendly)...!  Many towns around here give a limit of 9 and more than that requires a kennel license (which is cheaper than licensing the individual dogs).  If the law gets passed people will stop licensing their dogs in order to stay under the radar-thus the town will take a financial hit.

I'm very glad you got the comments you have on this.  I don't think they should limit the dog number like that.  I'm glad you got this message out there for the public's review.

The ban is rediculous.  I can see a limit depending on the zoning or type of housing (e.g., apartment or condo vs. single family with land.  This is so extreme!

As a Native West Virginian I am appalled at Hurricane advocating such. If it has to do with those are illegally breeding and/or fighting dogs I can understand the concern however to penalize all is ludicrous.

This would eliminate the potential for foster parents for dogs. What we need is common sense and common sense law.

If it is due to overbreeding have mandatory spay and neuter laws.

Totally Against...do you know in NYC there is NO dog limit law...and the living quarters can be tight.  It should be about the quality of life of the dogs, not the number.

No doubt the Law was set up by someone who doesn't appreciate the value of a loving animal. I think as long as the animals are not endangering others then you should mind your own business. Of course you should have twenty to thirty animals on a .20 acre lot.
