A Personal Letter to the Newly Licensed Real Estate Agent

"Consumer Behavior Class" by Ed Schipul

It was the first morning of classes at Arizona State University. I was approaching the culmination of my degree and  was enrolled in an upper division course called "Conversational Spanish."

The teacher arrived and, unsurprisingly, addressed us in Spanish. She told us that we would speak nothing but Spanish throughout the semester; then she asked us to introduce ourselves. She wanted us to share with everyone what our hopes would be for the class. There were more than a dozen of us in attendance, so this took quite some time.

I would be second to the last; my neighboring student appeared to be quite young- like an incoming freshman. I presumed he must be some sort of whiz-kid to be able to mix with students much older than he. However, it was apparent to me that he might be in over his head; he was increasingly nervous and I wondered if perhaps he felt his language skills were not quite up to the caliber of the others in the group.

When it was finally his turn to speak he said, in English, "I'm guessing this isn't German 101?"

---------

As a newly licensed real estate agent I attended my first meeting with other members of an established agency. I felt a bit disoriented in that meeting, as there were veterans of the industry using an assortment of acronyms and terms that were entirely unfamiliar to me. When they asked me to introduce myself to the group... I felt like saying, "this isn't German 101, is it?"

---------

This message is for the new agent. First of all, I want to say welcome to real estate! You've chosen a noble profession. We all have memories of home- that place that is more than just walls and a roof... but a place to create memories. By choosing to make real estate your path, you'll discover the feeling of satisfaction that comes with knowing that you've done some good in the world. This feeling will help propel you to become as proficient at this profession as possible

However- right now you may be feeling the weight of the task ahead... let me assure you that, with diligence and enthusiasm you'll be up to speed sooner than you could imagine.

We were all new at some point. If you feel that your fellow agents are speaking a language they didn't use in real estate school... well... we're just so used to the jargon that many of us forget to employ the more familiar alternatives to the real estate slang. If you don't understand a term or two, please- don't be shy... ask us what we mean. Though you may meet an impatient agent or two, most will be very helpful. You'll learn quite quickly that many of the more successful agents will treat you quite well and will offer valuable insight and encouragement. You'll esteem such agents throughout your career.

Second, you're probably wondering how you'll be able to earn some business. You've come to the right place. This message comes to you from a blogging service called ActiveRain. I'm a member of this network but so are more than 100,000 other persons from across the nation and, increasingly around the world. By joining ActiveRain you'll be able to ask other members any question that enters your mind. Chances are you'll receive answers rather quickly. These questions can be asked in a "members only" forum that lets you speak only to an audience of members. Next, you'll be able to "blog" ... that is to say- post messages to a larger audience of people. When you do so, "speak" (or type) as if you're in person. People will be able to relate to you as you address them conversationally. It may take a while to get a hang of it, but soon enough you'll "find your voice"... and with it- a few new clients.

Finally- don't be intimidated in the slightest that there are persons with hundreds of posts. They each started with one message. Before long you'll be surprised at the quantity of messages you've delivered. Not each one will resonate with everyone... but that is to be expected. The important discovery you'll make is that a few have resonated with someone. It's quite the experience to meet people this way. You'll discover that you'll do more than assist someone in their real estate needs... you may actually make a few friends in the process.

I wish you great success in real estate. My hope is that this will become more than just another step on your career path but that you'll find the way to make it your long lasting career.

Chuck:  This is a very sweet and accurate post!  It is very nice of you to address this issue.

Please post it to the Real Estate Rookie Group also.  It is perfect for them.

Mana- The star came as a surprise. I’ve met a few new agents and wanted to give them some encouragement- heaven knows they get enough negative news.

Jack- If anything- it seems to have become very technical… so much of real estate these days involves using new technologies. I think that may be part of Activerain’s appeal. It help acclimatize the newer agent by offering insight into such a variety of tools.

Tammy- Isn’t that true? Those who are always looking to learn and improve seem to have the most to offer the new agent.

Sid- It is quite the adjustment, isn’t it? It’s good though… each new skill makes us more valuable. Vince- I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Kent- I heard a new word today… then I quickly forgot it. Oh well… this old dog will have to learn *that* new trick tomorrow.

Melinda- I’m happy that you found it encouraging. We could all use that support… new or old.

Renee- That’s exactly how I felt as I met people who were willing to walk me through a few things. That seems to happen here as a rule rather than the exception.

Judy- I wish I’d written it then… or… that I had realized it back then.

Susan- I wonder if there’s a “horse and buggy” group here? For some reason, if there were, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Sylvie- I love to hear that. I think that the newer agents have that hay-making time… we can only be new once… and as we approach the people we know best they seem to be more willing to help us out… at least that’s what I discovered.

Pam- In your honor I made another minor change to my banner. Maybe I should change it every day.

Teresa- I was hoping it would be easy to follow. I actually cut out some advice… I think I was going on a bit long and felt shorter/sweeter would be better.

Pam- I feel like I’ll never get out of German 101… but I’m thinking that’s a good thing.

Elena- Good point… there are several ways for new folks to learn about the business… virtual assistants, closing coordinators, personal coaches, mentors… they all can be quite helpful.

Pamela- It’s always a good idea to have some financial buffer before starting any venture… and even more in this market of ours.

Dan- I'm glad to make it into your bookmark!

Dee Dee- It's all a part of the ";pay it forward"; philosophy that seems to be very prevalent here.

Kathleen- Trilingual? I like that! You can baffle us on several fronts if you so choose. :-)

Mirela- You're always full of great ideas. I didn't know that group existed. I joined up and added it there.

Chuck, I really enjoyed reading this and was a little sad since I wish I could have read this 3.5 yrs ago. Although there are many people on AR willing to give "warm fuzzies" they are not as many in the real world. Thanx

Chuck,

I love this post and as Mirela mentions it is perfect for the Real Estate Rookie group. I see that you have added it because it shows right under your blog. But for the life of me I cannot find it in the group!!! I really wanted to feature it there. I am wondering if the reason is it is previously featured by AR...Too bad. Maybe you could let someone reblog it?

Buffy- Sadly it's true... locals tend to be a little less helpful, while this assortment of agents are unusually exuberant in the advice department.

Karen- I've turned on the "re-blogging" feature if that's helpful. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Also- I'm happy to discover there's a rookie group. Now I'm going to be looking through the post in there.

Thanks for the post.  I am a newby agent, (only had my license for a few months) and been on Active Rain for about the same amount of time.  Real Estate can be intimidating.  Luckily I have had a few great agents that have helped me when I felt like I was in over my head.  Your post is definatly encouraging.  Thanks

Chuck,

I've had my license since July 2008!  This is my first comment & I couldn't be happier to post a comment to such an inspiring letter.

It was just a few months ago when I was at my first meeting. Your comment surely rings a bell.  Whew!  The lingo made me wonder if I belonged there.  Two months later...you bet I belong!  Do I have all the lingo down?  Nope!  But, I'm excited for what's in front of me.

Thank you so much.

Debbie

Chuck, thanks so much for a great post! I am one year into this and I still feel like a newbie. And I'm definitely still trying to figure out all that's available here on AR. Sometimes I wonder am I ever going to feel like I know what I'm doing? Anyway, I appreciate helpful posts like yours. Thanks for sharing!

Brady- That *is* encouraging. It's so good to have others who are willing to mentor you.

Debbie- Your first comment? I am so flattered! Also... a little secret about the new lingo- there's no end to it!

Kristi- The beautiful thing about AR is this- once you feel you've learned it, they find a new way to upgrade... they can keep you on your toes (which is a good thing).

Hi Chuck,

This is a great post. I think it sums up how a lot of us felt at our first office meeting. We have to ask the questions however green we may appear in doing so. How else are we going to learn? If you have a good team, it sure makes it easier.

Nice letter, Chuck.  I never got one as a newly licensed realtor .... (or even a new member of AR:))
I wish YOU great success and I hope to continue reading you in the Rain (while I struggle to learn to write quality blogs, with Liz's help). :)

Sheila- Do you have an update? I'm guessing you've had an opportunity. Curious by nature, I wanna know. :-)

Peggy- It's so nice to have a group of supportive people it can make *all* the difference in the world.

Sylvie- I don't know about you... but writing at Liz's level? A boy can dream. :-)

What a nice, encouraging post.  It wasn't all that long ago that I got my license, and I remember walking out of the classroom and into a world that did not fit the textbooks.  I was fortunate to join a great group, and they helped me unlearn the classroom teachings and eased me into reality.

LOL Chuck ... I am not going to hold my breath waiting to write at Liz's level, but she's pretty good at beating me up....errr.... I think it's called motivating me to write (which I have a really hard time doing).  I prefer to read other people's blogs and comment.
And you do a pretty good job yourself. :)

Hi Chuck,

I'm a little confused.  I'm hoping you can help me out.  I posted two new blog's.  They were both "For Sale" flyers.  After posting, I found out I couldn't get points for it because it was an ad.  I looked around and saw many For Sale ads and it appeared they got their points.   What am I doing wrong?

Thank you, Debbie

Great info for new agents.  I read so many of these posts when I first started that I am able to smile now.  Always more to learn daily.

Scott-I remember the feeling! Yes... so much of us learn the "rules" without learning the "how to" ... it's nice when there are others who help us figure it out.

Sylvie-I thing the best remedy is the phrase, "don't get it right, get it written." Just start typing and then fix it before you post. Or, as is my case, notice how wrong it is after you post. :-)

Debbie-I don't know how I missed this... I had thought this post had fallen off the map and just recently discovered I was missing comments... I don't know the points rule on ads... have you figured it out? If not, I'd be happy to check.

Karen- It surprises me!

Latonia-Ahh yes... it's nice when you're not looking for the translation book each time your peers speak.

Regina- I'm glad you liked it.
