And You Think You Have It Bad?

We're closer to the end of the year than many of us realize. It's right around the corner. So we'll soon usher out 2008, and bring in 2009. It's been an interesting year, and a difficult one for many, so when I came across these statistics from 100 years ago, I thought it might put things a little bit in perspective. I share them with you here...

THE YEAR 1908

The year is 1908.
One hundred years ago.

The average life expectancy was 47 years.
Old Man

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. (Good Grief!  What was it like to be stuck in a crowd?... DB)

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the
Eiffel Tower

The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.  ( HMMM.... Wonder what the real estate folks made? DB)

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Jackass Doctor
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard'.
(Guess some things haven't changed
so much.DB)

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. (What do you say to that,
Starbucks? DB)

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. (OH! PUHLEEZE! Borax? Well, come to think of it, you might need Borax to get it clean if you only washed it once a month....DB)

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. (And who decided who was 'poor'?  DB)

Five leading causes of death were:
1 Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of
Las Vegas , Nevada, was only 30!sheep in the desert

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. (Now, that's just WRONG. DB)

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write. (thit ain't
rite nether. DB)
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE
U.S.A.

So, we think times are tough now....what with the bail out, politics as usual, jobs loss, pay cuts, foreclosures, gas prices, food prices.....bare with me here, I beg you, just imagine for a moment if you can.....how bad it would be if you had to

                                         WASH YOUR HAIR WITH BORAX!

Have a great day!

WOW! That was amazingly interesting!! When you compare...we don't have it so bad, huh? I've often thought about other hygiene related facts I have heard from that era. I'm not crazy about being in the middle of a crowd when most people bathe often and use deoderant. JUST IMAGINE!!! OH MY. This was great! Thanks for sharing and GBU!!

Talk about putting things into Perspective.....you're absolutely right. We live & take so much for granted.  We have certainly come a long way. What a BLESSING!
