WHAT WAS IN, IS NOW OUT

Garden path Cooking, entertaining, reading, relaxing and sleeping for many decades in the USA have been activities that homeowners did inside the house.  Now, the trend for many is to move activities to the out spaces.  Just as formal  sitting rooms indoors are passé, formal gardens are out and the lived-in garden is very chic.
Kitchens for the patio come complete with fire brick pizza ovens, refrigerators, ice makers, sinks, and the traditional favorite BBQ grill in a fashionable streamlined stainless steel model.  Entertainment tents, screened in  3- season rooms and gazebos move the crowd from the main indoor living spaces.  Piped out music, a flat screen TV and speakers that look like rocks, add to the draw.  A hot tub complete with built in DVD/CD player and mood lights couldn’t hurt!  Container water gardens and fountains soothe the weary and bring tranquility to this outdoor haven.
How does a stager treat these areas?  Less is still the best.  Resist plastic, religious objects and garden gnomes.  Add a few quality eye-catching pieces that project simple elegance.  Place a few  colorful pillows on the seating pieces with an accenting throw over the back.  Now is not the time for neutrals!  You want to accentuate the  (hopefully) neutral color of the home, so be sure  your potted plants and hanging baskets are all in the same coordinating colors.  Think— POP— and — WOW! This includes vertical spaces, so think of vines, trellis shapes,  and climbers. An outdoor rug can anchor a grouping as well.  Plants that are scented: like roses, lilac, and jasmine, add to the ambiance but don’t overwhelm when outdoors.
A good outdoor living space can sell the home, as the prospective buyer envisions the memory making moments that could be experienced here.

If you want to be part of the “in crowd”, you will want to be thinking “out”.

Good blog Kathleen.  Here in Florida we literally live outside during the cooler months.  In fact, we haven't sat inside and watched TV more than two or three times since November.  I consider my "outdoor" living space tastefully appointed, (maybe its not) but here in FL you wouldn't believe the lengths people go to to"decorate" their yards.  The gamit runs from pink flamingos everywhere to Pee Wee Herman style.  Arrrrrrrgh!  Getting people to remove those things is almost worse than having them remove family photos inside.  Afterall, they moved here to live the Florida lifestyle and don't want to give that up!

Making Rochester Beautiful One Home At A Time
Hi Kathleen, I live in the Rochester area and am very excited to be able to start doing this soon.  The winter months here are sooooo long that I can't wait to actually "do" the staging part in the exterior of my clients homes; I'm sure you have been eager to do that here in MN also.

Kathleen,

great tips. I know we've seen more and more "outdoor rooms" at our homeshows etc - and I think it's great! Finally, you actually get to use your outdoor space - comfortably. (Of course the downside is: It can now cost as much, if not more to finish your outdoor spaces.)

Kathleen,

"Pop" and "Wow" are my favorite 'accessories' when staging a house - whether inside or out!  You're MY kind of stager!

Kathleen, great thoughts.  I am waiting for the garden stores to open here to decorate the backyard which is plain this year after the winter.  Thankfully we don't have many pink (or blue) flamingos here but lots of lovely things to choose from!

Yes I was at a house the other day staging and I made a comment to my client that if I was staging the house next door the big GARGOYLES on the front lawn would have to go...

We really did have pink flamingos in our yard when I was a kid.  I wish I still had them. I do have a pink flamingo light string I put on my horse trailer at horse shows. I also take  pots of flowers, a hanging basket & stand, tiki torches, outdoor carpet, a fold up table & chairs - awwww just like home!
