Peace of mind; priceless

By
Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty Washington LLC

I keep telling my clients to change the locks after they move into their new home but I still find several of my past clients who haven't changed those locks.

Reasons;

  1. The sellers were moving out of state and we felt at ease with that.
  2. We trust the sellers.
  3. We don't have the money right now.
  4. We have Home Owners Insurance.
  5. We have an Alarm System.

I also remind my clients to change the codes on the Garage Door Opener and Alarm System.

I explain;

  • A recent study showed that 60 % of people polled never changed the factory set code on their garage doors that they install themselves.
  • People loan out garage door openers to people to mow their lawns and give them codes for their alarms so they could bring in the mail and the news papers.
  • Check with the home owners association in gated communities to see how many gate cards are checked out to the prior owners.

My clients have learned the hard ways over the years. Each of the examples has a story that goes along with it.

Let your clients know that you care about them. The best home warming gift you could give would be to pay for a lock smith to rekey the entire house.

Peace of mind; priceless

Agree or disagree let me know...

Of course you're right.  Bet we're a little lax here on Kauai where many people never lock their doors (I do).  I really must go rekey my own locks not that a roommate has moved out, thanks for the remnder.

If they don't change the locks, they probably don't use the alarm system either. That is really foolish, I have at least 2 friends who have keys to my house. Can you compare the cost of a couple locks, to the cost & hassle of replacing all your valuables?? That is the ones you CAN replace.

Paul I have actually used that as a great closing gift.  If you talk with a couple of good locksmiths in your area find one that you are comfortable with and say give them a $50 gift certificate good toward getting their locks changed.

I live on an Island and Yes, have recently been robbed. The subwoofers out of my husbands Jeep were stolen along with other items that were in our yard. Beef it up, secure it.

Good Post and it is true.  People always think that will never happen to me.  And it can.  We changed our locks before we moved in.

Hi Paul - Very good points. Here in Maine, we have a tendenccy not to lock our doors, too.  I love the idea of a gift certificate to the locksmith.

It's not about how nice the sellers are. How many people give out keys to friends and neighbors.

My brother is a lock smith. He goes to every one of my clients home and rekeys the doors for them. Dont change the locks change the keys. Its less cost. Always a smart move.

It is priceless. Doesn't matter what the neighborhood is like. Kids cutting class can do stupid things and get into trouble easily. An unlocked window is an easy invitation. Plus technology has made things smaller, lighter and more expensive.

Paul, we always seem to think it will never happen to us. I had a car stolen a few years back in a commuter parking lot. It is a very uneasy feeling when the parking lot is empty and your car is gone. Thanks for the reminder.

I suppose I have to agree with you.  When we purchased this home, we did not change the locks or the garage code.  My question is... how do you know that the owners have not changed the locks??  :-)  Kidding.  Anyway, I appreciate the thought and will go buy some locks today.  I guess I never really thought about it, which does not make sense.  Thanks!

Looks like a fair amount of the country either doesn't have to lock their doors or will soon have a boost in the lock smith business. I think it is great either way. I love reading your comments, thank-you...

I've paid for a few of my Clients to have the locks changed. I'm a stickler for locks, especially in a large metropolitan area. I've even been known to have my own locks changed if I lost a key.
