Roanoke Island Finally Gets Water Hook Ups

The Dare County board of commissioners has finally given it's ok to the extension of water lines to the unincorporated areas of Roanoke Island. The incorporated town of Manteo has had its own water system for a long time but the areas outside the town limits were on wells.

The new water lines will be run to the areas north of Manteo and south to the village of Wanchese and Skyco. Once the lines are completed the county will require mandatory hook-ups and a $2,500 impact fee payable over 5 to 7 years. The usage rates will be the same as for the rest of the county. The area north of Manteo will be completed in the next 3 years and in the next 2 years for Skyco and Wanchese.

I think it is great for those who want the city water to be able to have it, but for those of us on wells that do not want the city water nor have the funds to pay for the hook-up or the plumber fees to run water pipes to your home, I think it is unfair.   We should not be forced to have to buy something we do not want.  I think if you want the water fine, then you should get it.  If you do not want it than you should not have to pay for it.  It is almost like being told what kind of car you have to buy, we should all have a choice.
