Green High School is Proactive

pcAs a former school administrator we were always concerned about the use of alcohol among members of our student body.  We were concerned for student safety and the values of use/abuse of chemical substances.

Our local high school (Green Local Schools) is taking a proactive approach in dealing with potential chemical use (especially alcohol) among students attending school events.  Local officials, and in particular our principal Joe Nicklos, will administer breathalyzer tests before permitting students to enter their annual homecoming event.  The student council played a significant role in promoting and implementing the tests; an obvious measure of their high level of maturity and responsibility.  I am always impressed by the "forward thinking" of young people in our community and applaud their sense of civic responsibility.

Joe Nicklos was formerly involved with the North Royalton school implemented a similar program with great success.

You can read about the program by clicking on the following link:

My congratulations goes out to Mr. Nicklos and his student body for supporting a great idea and taking measures that demonstrate a serious concern for every member of their student body.

John~ It is nice to know that those young people took the initiative to have the breath analyzer testing for alcohol at their school before homecoming!  It really does show maturity on their part!  Too bad more kids don't think like that!

Are you not concerned about violating Student Constitutional rights? or false positive test results?

MEC - Courts have consistently upheld a school district's right to monitor student chemical use and prohibit participation in school events where a student has been engaged in drugs and/or alcohol.  They also have consistently upheld school district disciplinary actions where students under the influence have attended school events.   The answer is no; students do not have the right to participate in school sponsored activities while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Schools have long taken a "no tolerance" approach to student chemical use and their efforts in working with abuse programs is to be applauded.

My background before becoming a Realtor was in education administration with involvement as a liaison to Summit County Juvenile Court.  I have also worked with the local police department in their DARE program as well as the district CARE program.
