Website Advice

By
Home Inspector with Comprehensive Building Inspections & Consultants

First I would like to thank everyone that helped me select a new reporting system, I am thus far thrilled with my selection.

Now I need your help again. I am attempting to build my own website. No, I'm not a computer wiz. I am using a "do it yourself" site that gives me numerous options to choose from and allows me to insert much of my own material. Anyway, I am ALMOST 100% happy with the results. .

There seem to be certain limits to some of my options. I spoke to the folks at the site, some of my requests are going to be do-able, some were not do-able yet, so if I have to wait a bit, I might.

What I am wondering is if there are other sites similar to this one that might offer more options. Although the site I am working with specializes in Home Inspectors, It does not necessarily have to be.

Any help would be appreciated.

I STARTED CHECKING THE SITES YOU GUYS ARE MENTIONING. BECAUSE I WANT TO GET SOMETHING GOING FAST I WILL USE A COOKIE CUTTER SITE FOR NOW, IN THE FUTURE MAYBE I WILL GET SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR ME.

RIGHT NOW I'M LOOKING INTO INSPECTORSITES, THEY SEEM TO OFFER MORE THAN THE PLACE I WAS GOING TO HOOK INTO. AND EVEN A FEW BUCKS CHEAPER.

KEEP IT COMING!

THANK YOU!

I'm going to register a domain name, when I fill out the form (with available name) it offers me the same name with different extensions (.biz, .net, etc.) of course the site recommends that I do this for various reasons. Is it really advisable of are they simply trying to sell me something.

Thanks for posting!  I started with yahoo site builder as well, but have since changed routes.

Let us know how it all turns out.

Well it looks like im going to choose inspectorsites.com. I may register my domain name with godaddy.com . Only because they sre a bit less expensive... I think????

First thing you have to do is pick a domain name and register it. I finally came up with one I like that is not taken. Now comes the confusing part, to me anyway since I'm not at all familiar with this. They throw all these options at you. Increased storage, engines, ssl's, additional suffix's etc, etc. I have no idea what is important or what is simply "filling my shopping cart".

So instead of moving forward, I'm at a standstill. I'm trying to find someone that can "take me by the hand" and help me get started.

I just moved my site from my old host (Yahoo), it was not a pleasant process.  Yahoo has no customer service so to speak.  You need to find out what is involved with your new host when you want to move your site, if you ever do.  I'm now with http://www.hostmonster.com  and very happy.

Good morning Scott,

I was going to let inspectorsites host me, 19.95 a month, they mention a set up fee of $99. I also looked at godaddy.com . Their monthly fee is five dollars less, but they offer all of these options, add on's. I am at a loss and stuck in the mud... I have no idea about what is necessary and what is "filling my shopping cart". Until I can figure it out (finding someone with the proper knowledge to "take me by the hand", I am at a standstill. I REALLY want to get up and running!

I am thankful for the help. I really want to get it right and how better to learn than by my peers.

I don't always know what I like, But I do know what I don't like. I hoped if I looked hard enough I would find my favorite flavor.

I'm not sure if it includes stat summaries. I would not mine if it had one. It would be another thing for me to check every 10 minutes.

congrats Steve....Are you going after full building or commercial inspection.?

Most of your inquiries will be along that line, or some condo buyers

The reason I mention this is because if you want home inspection you had better make sure you at least put home as a word in your keywords.

If you do not yet know what these are then ask your menter at that site what they are and how to insert them.

Do not forget to link up to active rain as it will increase your web presence.

Sorry if this is not comming out right as I am off location on windows 98.Yikes and dialup where I feel like I stepped into a time machine.

Bob,

I will use "home" in many keywords, I was having a hard time finding an available domain name and this was the best I could do so far. As a domain name do you think I will have a prolem with it the way it is?

I do plan on targeting commercial/industrial clients as well. Home & Building is in my name, not just home.

I can't wait to hook up!

Bob,

I took your advice  to heart. Although I don't want it to be simply "home" I agree that "building" may give an unintentional appearance too.

I just registered another name,  inspectmyproperty.com

I think that's a tad better. What do you think?

I use godaddy for hosting.  I haven't found anything more reasonably priced.  I had an independant build my site years ago.  He is no longer in the business, but I have an amazing and reasonably priced provider now.  Chris Slat - reach him at mrslat@gmail.com.  He'll give you samples and pricing.  Professional product with college student pricing.

Hi Mary.... nice to hear from you,as we need that feminine view point here to keep us grounded.Steve has made his choice at this point,so anyone who can help out with his approch would be appreciated.

Hi Steve.....Yeah what I was pointing at so subtly is there has never been a call at chicago property inspection for any home inspection business at all.

Every call has related to condo and multi unit.

Yes every house is a building and every house is a property, but in the real world peole do not think this way.

That is why I needed more than one site.

Personaly I'd recomend you open a second site also if you intend to draw home inspection.

If you want to stay independant and not beholden to anyone for referals(scraps)you will need to think about it....................LATER.

Right now enjoy your creative side and have fun.Thats why we do this.

Bob,

I may do just what you recommend as per an additional site, eventually.

I hope to do alot of comercial/industrial/institutional inspection. I have a great deal of experience in this niche. I am still highly involved in this type of construction.

We will see...
