The Marathon Psycho

Marathon Time per Mile

Some people may consider me nuts but I am actually reflecting on the psychology of finishing a marathon. Practically every Saturday this year I have spent a few hours with runners that joined the Team in Training.

During the cold winter months I trained for my First Marathon and learned the importance of mixing up the distance and intensity of runs. Marathon Day in San Diego was an eye opening experience but my finishing time was a bit slower then anticipated.

Upon returning to Connecticut one of the TNT Coaches told me my photo was being used in the promotional flyer for the ING Hartford Marathon so I decided to remain with the Purple People for my second big event.

Normally I carry a camera during races but I am trying to tone down my use of gadgets so I only took a few photos.  My most essential toy is Forerunner GPS to track my progress enabling me to look back and see where I had difficulty.

In Hartford I paced myself pretty good during the first half but still noticed the hurdle of hitting the wall around mile 21 where I slowed to a walk with a bit of cramping.  After a few stretching stops I was able to pick it up much better than in my previous marathon and finished with a 4:49, which was a 26-minute improvement from the Rock-n-Roll Run.

It’s getting close to decision time for my next long run of 26.2 miles. The Mingle in Miami is getting closer but the thought of training during the upcoming chilly months and then landing in the heat and humidity of Florida a day or two before the race has me concerned.

My wife is pushing for a winter get-a-way so maybe I’ll psych myself up for a five-hour finish and run.

If you have any suggestions or comments on marathon training I always welcome input.  Beyond running I do have to work so if a move to New Haven County is in your future I'm available to help.  My primary territory consists of North Haven, North Branford, Branford, Guilford & Madison but familiar with many other towns if needed.

Hey Dan.. I was waiting for this post.... so, you didn't take your camera?? I guess enough time hasn't passed for you to think about Miami yet...... doing a 1/2 is not second class.... it is an honorable run..... Sandra deserves that winter break.... just hit the treadmill on those nasty days.

I am officially in the 16 week training program. This week is my 12 miler.... did 11 this weekend. Felt pretty good - hips a bit tight, but ok the next day.... maint. runs during the week (3) are a bit faster then when I started. I can't wait to run tomorrow outside --- we are getting a cool spell - well, no humidity anyway....

Remember to rest.... no running this week ---- a couple nice walks to stretch out is good - no?

Dan I can't imagine anyone considering you "NUTS" :)

I have to handed to you in putting in the kind of time that you do in training for these runs.

Oh puhleeeeeze old man! Stop whining and go run! My Sandra will go stark raving mad if you just sit around the house whining about whether you should have been training for it. And you know you would :)

Pat... I carried the camera but didn't find any decent photo opportunities.  After doing a couple of bigger events it seemed so tiny with under 2000 marathon runners.  Going the full distance in Miami isn't the problem but I don't wanna get beat by a local girl!  LOL

George... I never understand the Nutty insinuations either..

Jeff... Actually I still have never had a Martini.... Maybe one of these days....

Jennifer... Old!  You are not far behind....  and training wise I'm always ready.

Julie... The thought of a warm beach during the middle of winter does sound good...

Hi Dan - I'm envious!  Good for you - of course, you're not nuts!  Those who have never run have no idea what a high it is!  Long distance runs are in the past for me although I can be seen chasing Bruce around the neighborhood.  Sometimes he lets me catch him!

Good luck on your training!

Hi Mary... I'm envious of your weather.  It's been a wet & snowy season up here while I've been training for my next big event... Looking forward to next week in the Florida warmth for the Miami Marathon.

Hey Suzanne... Still have the youngest in high school so couldn't do a couple of weeks.  As it turned out the week we're going he has mid-terms so he'll be staying with his older brother.  Hopefully next year he'll be able to travel with us,  I signed up for the Goofy Challange for January 2010... Will do the Half Marathon on Saturday and the Full Marathon Sunday.   It's a year away so you could always start training and do a half!

Dan ... thanks for this article and congratulations on finishing your two marathon running events during 2008.  That's great.  My advice?  Take at least three weeks off after a marathon before entering another competitive event.  Your body will need at least 21 days to recovery.

Other advice? Keep it moving and have some fun.

During my big running days some years ago, I started and finished 23 marathon and mountain road race events. I have some interesting and great memories and made some friends along the way.
