Do you have a problem?

Sometimes we have items in our homes we need and love but they look unsightly. I am going to try to give you a few ideas to help hide those “things”. That’s the beauty of interior decorating; it is mainly problem solving and seeing how creative you can be.

Fortunately there are many places you can turn to for help. Hire a professional for a consultation or research other problems similar to yours in magazines and on-line.

First, let’s look at the beautiful flat screened TV we saved for and hung on the wall, but now it looks like a black hole when it isn’t turned on. What to do? Some suggestions are; treat it like a window and have draperies hung to match your other windows. Consider having it made into a part of a wall entertainment center/book shelves. Hang shutters over it and close when not in use. Have a piece of art or a large mirror fitted to cover the TV when not being watched. This site will show you one idea. http://www.tvcoverups.com/tvc/ Don’t forget these TV’s all come with cable wires that need to be hidden as well. There are many cable management systems available today. This is one suggestion, http://www.av4home.co.uk/acatalog/Cable_Management_Solutions.html.

Next we are going to talk about all the small appliances we gather in out kitchen. No they do NOT all need to be in view all the time. You should consider storage when you buy them. If you have no extra room in your cupboards then a closet nearby fitted with shelves would work. If you have the room for an island on wheels in your kitchen, you could store the items away and still have easy access to them. I would first decide how many I use on a regular basis and then put away the seldom used ones. If you don’t use them at all its now time to give them to someone who would. Less clutter and more room for new gadgets!

Do you have an indoor cat? Litter boxes are not a decorating feature but also very necessary.  Locations of the litter box is so important and if you have ever had an indoor cat you know how picky they can be over where it is and if it is clean.  Remember to never keep a litter box in a bedroom. I searched the internet for interesting ideas and have found some I think are perfect.

Perhaps you have a window that is not centered on a wall and impossible to place furniture around. It may make your room seem very unbalanced. One quick trick is to install a drapery rod wider than the existing window and “make “it look centered. Of course the drapes will hang over part of the wall. I worked in one house that the windows were very short. We installed the blinds farther up on the wall to the height a longer window would have been. This made the window look balanced in the room. The inside look is correct and you would never know the window wasn’t as large as it should have been.

Often you need a wall where there is none. Folding screens may be the answer if you put it where you want a wall and decorate around it.

None of us have perfect homes whether they are old or brand new, plus we love to change our furniture around and we love new colors. There is always a problem to solve or a room to redesign.

Enjoy each change; there will be a time with no changes!

Hi Nicola,

I love that "kitty Washroom" on your first link.  I have a few cats and I could definitely use the "Kitty Washroom".  I believe I'm going to order that.  Right now, I have a regular kitty litter that is a serious "eye sore"...

                  Thanks Nicola,
