I love my real estate profession because...

By
Real Estate Agent with Raleigh Cary Realty

As soon as I read the email from Sally about posting what you love about real estate, I knew exactly what I would write because I was at home watching my sick 9 month old son, Austin, for the 2nd day and counting.

There is not too many other jobs where I would have that kind of flexiblilty and not have to feel guilty calling into work.  I admit sometimes my initial reaction when my wife just assumes that I willl be the one staying home or running an errand is, "hey I have a job too and it is just as important."   But I quicky remember (or am reminded) that was the point of my career!

That is why we decided real estate not only fit my personality but it fit our lifestyle.  It allowed us to take care of the family not only financially (most of the time :) but gives the flexibility to do the things needed for the family in errands, watching the kids when needed, and volunteering at school etc.  My parents divorced when I was young and my father was not as active as I would have liked, so I have always wanted to be superdad!  Although I am not always perfect I do get to do things with my kids many fathers are not able to do!  When I began my real estate career I stayed at home with our first son three days a week until he was nine months old and I look fondly back at those days and being able to do that!

I often hear how I am so lucky that I do not have a boss to report to and my response to them is I have a bunch of bosses because that is kind of what my clients are.  I am joking but it is true.  The beauty of having all those bosses however, is that if one of them is too demanding, has unreal expectations or ask me to do something unethical I can fire them and still have a job!!  Not too many people I know can do that.

I am the type of guy who starts conversations with people who do not even know me and sometimes I get that look like who are you and why are you talking to me but I am never deterred.  There is always someone around the corner who appreciates a smiling face and real estate allows me to meet and talk to all kinds of people.  I enjoy meeting people and how they react to life!  I am a people watcher and there is no other setting quite like this one to see who a person really is.  I always say everyone is happy and great when they are getting what they want but you see the real person when things aren't going their way!

So in essence I love my real estate profession because:

  • Flexibility of time to be there for my family (I work a lot but I control it).
  • I can fire my boss at any time!
  • I love meeting and watching people.

Craig, hope your child recovers quickly. Yes, that's what I like about real estate, too.

What a great reminder why most of us have gotten into this business.  So much flexibility, so much interaction, never a dull moment.

With your care and attention, your son will get well really soon.

Kind Regards,

Manolis

The flexibility of this profession is one of its undeniably best points. Nothing could be more rewarding than knowing you won't catch any flack from your boss for staying home with a sick baby. I bet you and your wife are very glad you're able to do it!

I totally understand the feeling.  That's the same reasons I choose this as a career.  Good luck being superdad.

I love the graphic and the thoughts. I married a superdad that had to wait for our youngest to be born to feel that he fit the bill. Now the next time father's day or any day that is a superdad day comes along...I will share your graphic with him!  Sometime's Daddy's are born-sometimes they grow into the job-we love them all!

Often I have heard that people are surprised that in this down market so many realtors have hung in there... well this is why I'm sure. There are so many great things about our profession that it's hard to imagine doing anything else.  Glad you could spend that time with your son - only happens once :-)

Thanks everyone and for wishing Austin well!

And thank you Sally for reminding us of why we chose to get into real estate and the things we love about it!

We definitely have to remind ourselves the we still have a great job no matter what the market we just have to work harder!  I have learned some lessons through this and that is to save and plan ahead.  We will make it through and be that much smarter and ready when it comes because we have to expect it!

I've been tagged?

Will it hurt?

Will it last long?

Do I now have increased responsibilities?

Is it curable?

How much will this cost me?!!!!!

Signed,
