What if? -- Blog Action Day 2008

I don't know why it hit me.  It just did.

My baby girl was screaming in the car.  You know, that I'm here and I'm hungry cry.  For some reason, she was off the charts with her earsplitting wails.  Almost home -- it was the "Feed me NOW" cry.

I raced up our stairs, ran around the kitchen, finding the bottle, getting out what I needed, but I just could not move fast enough for her.  Food from mama was so much quicker, but we were past that point!  The cries escalated another octave.  I grabbed the handle of the refrigerator and stopped dead in my tracks as a thought from out of I-don't-know-where hit me like hard kick to the belly.

What if I opened the refrigerator and there was nothing there.

Nada.  Zip.  Empty.

What if I knew that I, her mother, had nothing to take away her misery?

What if I knew that there would be nothing tomorrow, or the next day?

What if I had to watch my baby slowly and painfully waste away to a shriveled sack of baby bones?

I knew that there were millions of mother's all over the world who knew that they had no food to feed to their babies.

I don't know why it hit me at that moment, but hit it did, and that horrifying thought has stayed with me ever since.

Blog Action Day 2008

Today is Blog Action Day 2008 to encourage bloggers to spread awareness of the deplorable poverty that exists in our world.  It exists in every country, city , town, village, community on earth.

Why?  The roots are strong and deep, but we have a big beautiful community of humans here who have the brains and the means to eliminate it if we focus on the problem.  Just thinking about the enormity of the problem makes my head hurt and my mind spin -- how can I possibly help?  I'm not going to try to dissect the causes, but just share a few ways to help that are accessible to you and me.

Mercy Corps

Heifer International

Habitat for Humanity

Feeding America (Second Harvest)

Mothers Fighting for Others

Don't wait for our fearless leaders to solve this one.  We can do it ourselves.

Elaine, I've spent the day moving around and reading "Blog Action" posts all morning. I'm reposting many. Thanks for this change in perspective experience. Very effective writing and to take us on this journey. Thank you for being you. I wrote about a local group that helped my son when he was so sick. I will forever be grateful and want to support them in all the ways I can. We need it at all levels. Thanks for your work.

Elaine - You remind me of the person who sits quietly for much of the conversation, only opening her mouth to speak when she has something truly profound to say (which makes everyone in the room shut up and think).  Nicely done, my friend.  I am going to flag this one, too!

Jennifer - That is really messed up.  I hope that she was able to get some kind of assistance to help her to be able to feed her baby.  She must have felt so terribly alone.

Fran - It's too easy to ignore.  I hope some of the awareness campaigns keep this in front of our faces.  We really have no excuse not to act.

Liz - My mind seriously wants to just shut down when I try to imagine my own kids dying of starvation.  I've let it shut down, which doesn't help.

Paul - I know you don't, nuff said :)

EVERYONE - Read Rocky Turner's Blog Action Day post.  I hope it will kick you the way it kicked me.

Elizabeth - Thank you, but I am hoping to start acting on my own prompt - that would be powerful.

My Sandra - I've always been one of the hopelessly, annoyingly optomistic people who actually think we can change things.  How about we move and DO it?

Colleen - "It can be overwhelming to think about, to the point of complacency."  Bingo!!!!  You said it!

Deb - That moment really did stick with me.  I think about it, but I don't think my imagination can even come close to the daily realities of true poverty.

Carole - We have to believe that a small act can start to make a difference.  Then we need to take those baby steps until the steps become habit.

Lisa - Life isn't fair, but maybe we could make it a little fairer.

Elaine, this is beautifully written.  I have often wondered how horrible it must feel to have hungry children you do not have the means to provide for.  This is unthinkable. Yet it happens every day.  Thank you for bringing it so beautifully to the forefront.

I am impressed with the power of the Internet voice, and with Rotary International doing their part, hungry children will be a thing of the past. like polio.  Join Rotary and help feed children worldwide.  In SC our Department of Agriculture is working to feed children, too.  Thanks for getting us motivated!

Jeanean - I will have to go read your post about that group. I think people are seriously missing out if they are not reaching out.  Although it is the secondary result of helping, the benefits to one's own self can be enormous.  Thanks for the compliments on my design, too!

Amanda - Thanks!  We need to eliminate this cause altogether -- wouldn't that be amazing?

Jason - If I were actually in the room with you, you might want to shut me up!  That was a really sweet thing to say.  I guess I have to be really moved to actually write things down.

My dear Elaine. So few words, so painfully and beautifully laid in our paths... naked unavoidable truth... No parent should ever feel the terror of not being able to feed their kids; no civilized society can call itself civilized for as long as kids die from hunger.

Thank you for the kick, dear, and for god's sake, why hasn't this been featured yet?!

HUGS!!!

Jane - I hope that the Internet brings our world together, first voices, then actions.  Rotary does good work.

Inna - What a terror.  We are uncivilized when the world's money & efforts go toward fighting each other instead of hunger.

Hi Elaine...Thank you for calling attention to a world-wide problem.  There are many, many babies and young children that do not have the food, shelter, or medical care they sorely need.

There are so many organizations such as the ones you mentioned.  The cause is real.  Our help is essential.  Do we actually try to lessen the problems or do we just let them continue?

Kate - Good to see you!  If we don't try, aren't we guilty?

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

I imagine truly starving children don't have the strength to cry and scream. The sound is likely more of a whimper. Feeding hungry babies, tots, chlldren, teenagers, adults and the elderly -- feeding everybody -- I have no idea why the world doesn't make ending hunger a priority. My husband and I support the Food Bank but it's not enough.

Didn't your mother ever try to guilt you into finishing dinner by saying, "Think of the starving children in China?" But children are starving all over the world. Nice post, Elaine.
