Helton Creek Falls in the Mountains of North Georgia.

Helton Creek FallsThe North Georgia Mountain region offers many waterfalls. One of the most accessible is Helton Creek Falls, located in the Chattahoochee National Forest just north of Neel's Gap on Blood Mountain.

There are actually two falls here, an upper falls that plunges at a sheer angle and is the taller of the two. and a lower falls that is easier to approach and although slightly less spectacular, is still a decent cataract worthy of a visit.

To get there; take U.S. 129 about 12 miles south from Blairsville. Turn left on Helton Creek Falls Road. The road is narrow and is only paved for about a quarter mile, so drive with caution.  Continue on the winding gravel forest service road approximately two miles to the parking area.

From there, take the well marked trail only 1/10 of a mile to the Lower Falls, and then an additional 1/10 of a mile to the Upper Falls observation deck.

Nearby attractions include the Blue Ridge Mountains, Vogel State Park,  Helen, Georgia, Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, Dukes Creek Falls, Desoto Falls, Anna Ruby Falls, Brasstown Bald, Unicoi State Park and Appalachian Trail and Walasi-Yi Center.

It sounds lovely.  How did 'Blood Mountain' get it's name?

Mel...

It was a sacred place to the Cherokee, and most believe the site of a battle between The Cherokee and Creeks, bur others say it was just the color of the vegetation! I saw it's because of my feet after hiking over it!

I like the Cherokee theory because I have a little of that 'blood' running through me.  I have been looking for a picture of my granmother from 1916.  She was two years old playing while her grandmother was sitting on a porch.

Bloody feet?  Yikes!

Well, it a long steep, rock section of the Appalachian Train. I have some photos somewhere when I hiked that section in the snow!

Richard, I love waterfalls, as they are more rare than people give them credit for.

What is this word you use 'snow'?  What is that?  I think I saw it once in a movie or on Jesse's blog.

Gary...

I like them because they change from day to day, based on weather, the season etc. And they sound beautiful!

Jesse lives in a white snowy world. I remember once in Pittsburgh it got to 15 below and it was the coldest I've ever been, Jesse said that it was 18 below today, in October! Holy crap, that's one cold place!

We usually get one dose (a few hours) of it every year.  I remember the coldest day I ever experienced here.  I was 12.  Our car broke down and it was -14.  It sticks out in my mind because I wasn't wearing shoes.  How's that for a wake me up?
