The cold weather is moving in and it's time to "put up" for the winter.

John Oliver Cabin in Cades Cove Great Smoky Mountains National ParkWe have just had our first cold snap here in the south. Patches of scattered frost and I'm having to think about turning on the furnace (it's freezing in here!) Fall is in full force and winter is just around the corner.

Back in the days of self-sufficiency, fall was a time to complete preparations for the winter ahead. It was necessary to make sure that enough food and fuel was "put up" to survive the lean months ahead. Survival depended on a care allocation of resources spread out over the entire year!

Do we think about our lives and are businesses that way? Do we have a complete understanding that we have to plan for the months ahead? Even if times right now are not as productive as we want them to be, the obligation to plan ahead is not diminished.

Whatever resources we have must be allocated over the next few months. We are talking about survival here. To not do so would be disastrous.

Good morning Richard-I hope you're doing well. Up early and hard at work I see. I'm up earlier that I was yesterday. Too much to do and too little time in which to to do it. Got to store up the resources for the harsh winter ahead. I forgot to tell you that pic on yesterday's post was awesome(the one with red)It is chilly here as well. I refuse to turn the heat on yet.  Don't worry that your posts don't all get featured. Just keep up the great blogging and you'll be fine. Right now I'm just happy when people come by and visit. The rest will come if its meant to.

BTW:I still manage to make it to Ga. even if it's late. What's your excuse for not coming to Va. You can't use that excuse of the blogs button you know. After all if you like people to come visit you, then you need to come visit them, otherwise they might forget  how to get to Ga. Then you'll be really cold and in Ga. :-(  Just a friendly little reminder for you. :-)))

Morning Richard...I thought it snowed last night!  We had a heavy alyer of frost on everything.  26 this morning.  It was a quiet and crisp morning...the kind I like when I am out hunting.  Planning for the upcoming winter, I have a bit over 1/2 of my wood cut!  The local grocery has my larder.

Lenn Great pic

Great post - I know I can get caught up with my "head down" working and lose track of where so many things are - thanks for the reminder.  As for winters - I'm hoping for snow in Jersey this year - my poor kids couldn't sled last winter!  And I need that excuse to sled too!

Lenn, that is a spanking wood chest. Love the design! Where on earth did you get that?

Richard, excellent talking points. I'm working on exactly what you've just said and am in a race against time to get my seller relocated as well.

Richard - another good analogy. I refuse to turn the heat on until November though. After all, this is the south. My putting up will be fine tuning my business plan and getting my website in order, as well as putting as many localism posts up as I can.

Richard:  We should all store a few nuts from every paycheck in the good times for the lean times.  If nothing else, we'd all be facing a more secure retirement.

Wow -- I remember getting preserves ready, pickles etc.  It was a time to make sure we had planned for the months ahead.   Perhaps all of this economic uncertainty will make people start to get back to the basics!
