Holderness, New Hampshire
Holderness is a small and largely rural town nestled between the foothills of the White Mountains and the shores of the Squam Lakes. Visitors and residents are drawn to the town for the lakes and mountains which provides a high quality of living. Holderness School an excellent private high school and Plymouth State University located in Holderness and Plymouth, offers excellent educational, cultural, and commercial assets complementing the grace of the countryside.
The Squam Lake region is one of the most desirable areas in our state. Originally, they referred to Squam as Keeseenunknipee, which meant "the goose lake in the highlands". The white settlers that followed shortened the name to Casumpa, Kusumpy and/or Kesumpe around 1779. In the early 1800's, the lake was given another Abenaki name, Asquam, which means water. Finally, in the early 1900's, Asquam was shortened to its present version, Squam.
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is nestled in the hillside of Holderness offering a close up look at New Hampshire's wildlife. A private, non-profit educational organization located on a 200-acre sanctuary, see wildlife and learn about their habitats. Explore Squam Lake on naturalist led nature cruises. A great family day of learning and fun!
Whether you come to Holderness to enjoy the lakes, or to relocate to the quiet of this area, Holderness offers residents and travelers much to do. Tour the lake on the Squam Lake Boat Tours, hike Rattlesnake trail and see an extraordinary view of the Squam region or sit at Walter's Basin and enjoy a marvelous meal. Walter's Basin, located in the middle of Holderness Village, is named for the famous trout, Henry Fonda's character in "On Golden Pond", spent much of his time pursuing.
The Real Estate market in Holderness is strong and vibrant with waterfront homes showing a drop in the excessive price increases experienced within the last 2 years. Prices have stabilized! Waterfront and water access homes are affordable and there are terrific choices on the market right now!
