A 56 Ft Tall Chicken?

Marietta Georgia is the County seat for Cobb County. It is an area rich in civil war history, there are many museums, theaters, and ante bellum homes.  Marietta is home to an Air Reserve Base and many businesses.

However, without a doubt our most famous landmark is a 56 ft tall chicken with a moving beak and rolling eyes!

Located at a major intersection in Marietta, the locals would be lost without the Big Chicken.  Directions to or from anywhere almost always include ... Go to the Big Chicken and turn... or, Starting at The Big Chicken head down Roswell Street toward Marietta ....
You get the idea.

Several years ago the owners were going to dismantle it.  Maybe it was a publicity stunt, I don't know.  The public outcry was unbelievable and the Big Chicken was saved for future generations. :-)

56 feet. That is quite some chicken. Reminds me of some big landmarks in Australia.

Home is where the hearth is.

Reminds me of the giant Brooks bottle in Collinsville, Illinois.

http://www.catsupbottle.com/

From their website:

The World's Largest Catsup Bottle stand proudly next to Route 159, just south of downtown Collinsville, IL. This unique 170 ft. tall water tower was built in 1949 by the W.E. Caldwell Company for the G.S. Suppiger catsup bottling plant - bottlers of Brooks old original rich and tangy catsup.

In 1995, due to the efforts of the Catsup Bottle Preservation Group (yes, there is such a thing) this landmark roadside attraction was saved from demolition and beautifully restored to its original appearance.

Recognized the world over as an excellent examply of 20th century roadside Americana, the World's Largest Catsup Bottle regularly garners national attention and attracts visitors and tourists every day.

In August of 2002, it was named to the National Register of Historic Places.

I don't work for Brooks, although I do like their catsup, but I just put all this type in my answer, 'cause I wanted enough type to be able to stand up next to this giant bottle.

56 ft tall chicken, that's impressive.

I can't tell from the picture for sure, but did Ellie put up a picture of an actual jumbo shrimp.

Bob - When I first moved to Marietta, directions were often provided by many as "East of the big chicken" or "West of the big chicken."  At the time, I didn't have a clue as to what they were referring to.  Now, 15 years later, there's isn't a time that I drive by it and giggle.  I didn't realize it was 56 ft. tall.  Wow!
