Wanting to Feel Special

I woke up this morning, a brisk morning for mid-October, and began my usual routine.  I went in to get my daughter up and ready and the first thing she says to me is, "Where's Mommy?  I want Mommy!" in a cute 2.5 year old voice.  Now this isn't the first time she's said this to me, in fact this has been going on for about 2 months.  However, the first time I heard it, the tenth time I heard it and even today, I think...when is she going to say, "Good Morning DADDY!"  I want her to say my name because it will make me feel good or special. 

So I'm not getting all wishy-washy here, I don't feel that my 2.5 year old daughter has the psychological edge on me quite yet, but it made me remember something that's particularly important when it comes to being a sales person, a real estate agent and a Dad.  Everyone wants to feel special. 

My business has been up and down like every-ones, but as I review my clients and my big successes, I realize that I did the best job when I made those clients feel like they were my special client.  I think even with the swirling markets, stock market charts looking like PONG, and the housing market faltering, if you continue to make people feel special, your business will continue.  Not matter how good or bad the economy people remember good service.

Give her another year or so you will be inseparable. ( my kids are 4 and 5 now)

Tyler, show her your wallet I did and my daugthers (3) have never stopped say daddy. Just kiddin, it'll come and just savor the moment. Then when they get into high school they will want you to let them out as far away as possible (that I'm not kiddin about).

Tyler - "Everyone wants to feel special."  True words my man.  I do believe there is at least one young lady who thinks you are about the most special and important person in the world.  In many ways, she's probably right.

I'm with my daughter all day every day. When she wakes up in the morning, the first thing she asks for is her daddy, who is typically gone to work already. Really bums me out.  But when she's hurt or scared or nervous about something, I'm the one she runs to. Kind of a cool trade-off, I think.

With my clients and business associates, I do my best to help and not just try to sell my services.  That makes me more of an asset in their eyes than if I sent 20 proposals of what I can do for them.  Helping them when they need it lets them see that I value them.  It gives a much bigger return than anything else!

Hello Tyler, How wonderful to get featured while you're still so new at this.  I am too.  I'm glad you wrote about your daughter.  I have three grandsons, two are three and one is five.  They are the joy of my life and I think they keep me young.  No matter what else is happening in the world, little ones can make you smile.  By, the way, before you know it, she'll be saying Daddy all the time. As a Parent I "Love" your story.  My Kids are what keep me smiling each day when I Head out to Sell Real Estate.  The funniest is when my 5 Year Old sees me come home after an evening appointment, and says "Mommy is home from Real Estating."  He then asks how it went because he knows if all goes well he gets more Legos. 

My Clients in Lewisville, Carrollton, Plano & Hickory Creek are all just like kids.  They need to made to feel that they're "Special."  I always get comments from them that make me know I'm doing a good job of that (ie  "I always know I can count on you to get me more information on a Property").

Keep up the good parenting and the good "Real Estating."

So very true.

Our actions have WAY more of an effect on our business than the economy does. Even though my focus is the luxury market, I tend to be flexible and take on clients that wouldn't quite be classified as being in my "niche". However, it is a personal stance of mine that I will NEVER do something for my luxury clients, that I am NOT willing to do for any of my clients. This consistency has proven itself effective in getting me more business.

So true. Making clients feel special will get your name embedded in their minds. It doesn't have to be anything big, either, and it'll make a serious difference.

I thank all of your for your responses over the last two days.  As a Newbie on Active Rain I'm completely blown away by the response and the featured post!!  I hope to respond personally to everyone in the next day or so and really appreciate your stories and encouragement.  I love how in this particular post, I received 50% of responses regarding our children and how they make us smile and the other 50% focused on making our clients feel special.  I look forward to reading your posts and hearing from you in the future.
