According to a Quad-City Times story, the National Weather Service has improved it's severe weather warning system by "fine-tuning" the warning area. Previously, the entire county has been put on warning when it really wasn't necessary for everyone in the county to head to the basement in the case of a tornado or severe storm that may be miles and miles from where they are.

Hopefully, as we enter the severe storm season, this narrowing focus will help remove some of the complacency involving frequent and inaccurate warnings.

One thing's for sure, when one of these big boys comes roaring your way, you'd better head for cover!

Whoa, those are some wicked pictures! Good luck through tornado season - living in Wisconsin, we're just the tip of the iceberg - an F5 isn't unrealistic though!

Jason,

I was in Seattle last summer, waiting to board our cruise to Alaska, when there was a "little incident" involving people being shot because of their religious beliefs. It happened just a block from where we were eating dinner! Maybe you don't consider that terrible, but my wife and I would rather be "safe" in Iowa than to be near that again.

Wouldn't that be cool to do that? I've never seen a tornado up close but I'd like to. I'm just kind-of crazy like that!

Jay,

A lot more people die from shoveling snow than from tornado activity.

But you probably have someone take care of the snow for you, right?

Lawrence got hit by a micro-burst last year in March...I was out selling a house in it and came back downtown to the office to write up the offer to be greeted by broken glass all over across the street in the storefront.

A couple years ago several Lawrence homes were destroyed in a tornado. Made me want to sell my Eudora home and move over here in Lawrence to get closer to the action! I love watching storms...just don't like the damage they bring.
