When I was younger I always heard lots of interesting innuendos about Pewaukee, and Pewaukee Lake. One in particular made me actually think it could hurt someone. The big thing was to stop at every bar around Pewaukee Lake and stop at every bar for a bar. This, in my eyes, not only would be dangerous, but crazy. There was seventy two bars at the time. Wouldn't that be a nice conversation with that individual!
Gangsters used to come to Pewaukee to have a good time as well. I personally think one of the craziest things we used to do with my friends was to get on the Lake, when it was frozen over, and everyone was on the Lake ice fishing, with our VW bug. My friends were absolutely crazy. That VW bug saw railroad tracks, motor cross tracks, and more. The Lake was pretty crazy though. My friends used to get that bug up to about fifty miles and hour or so, and whip on the emergency brake. The nice five minutes involved a bunch of long hairs going by fish shanties with old men screaming at them as we went by doing circles. I often wonder how I survived those times.
Today, Pewaukee has retained it's beautiful beach, it's magnificent large Lake, and the whole downtown was torn down and rebuilt with very luxurious townhouses next to each other; Business townhouses and buildings. Restaurants, piano bars, spas, and offices. A lot of Pewaukee has maintained it's old buildings, and charm as well. It's not hard finding someone to strike up a conversation with when walking downtown on the boardwalk on the beach.
My son will tell you the best thing in town is the candy factory. I can tell you he likes that place because I recently bought him braces. When asked if the teeth were more important, or the candy, my thirteen year old Spencer answers in his infinite wisdom. "That's easy Dad, everyone knows it's the candy."
The trolleys going out to the wonderful beach, and the days of women with parisils, and men with top hats may be gone, but Pewaukee is a wonderful place in Wisconsin that will never lose it's charm.
