The Real Estate "20"

By
Real Estate Agent with WOW Real Estate

Is there such a thing as the real estate "20"... like the freshman "10"???  Scales

I've experienced it and just wondered how many of you have had the same thing happen after starting your real estate career.

My first broker gave very good advice to new agents...

Set your goals and priorities and don't let real estate take over your life.

Knowing the odd hours that a real estate career can bring, I had already set my priorities even before I was licensed.  God, family, health, a little quiet time for No fast foodmyself...those came first.  I've done well on 3 of the 4.  Health, however, has gone by the wayside!  It didn't take long for exercise to stop and fast food has become the norm.  I've got to get this under control.  I know that I don't have as much energy and I'm sure that my eating habits along with no exercise are most of the problem.

So, this week I've tried to do better.  I haven't had any fast food - yeah!  I've taken my dogs for a long walk one day and did an exercise video another day.  Today is dog walking again.   I'm going to make time for exercise...no matter what!  I'm going to make healthier food choices.  Tina M's Blog post "Get Lean" has some good ideas about making changes for your health.

My goal...take care of my health and still be a great real estate agent!

Oh man Deidre, you are so right! I remember being in great shape, working out after work 4-5 times a week and thinking "when I get into real estate, I will be able to work out whenever I want and be in super shape!". That was 8 years and 20lbs ago! I have resorted to taking Boot Camps at 5:30 in the morning to get back into shape! Good luck and keep doing little things daily to break the bad habits we get into when we "can make our own schedule".

I too started eating a lot more fast food when I got into Real Estate, the key for me was to start packing a lunch (saves money in these "hard times" too).........

You are right exercising does seem to fall by the wayside.  I am trying to make time for this because without our health we have nothing.

Deidre,

I'm not sure if its the career, or the new baby, but I can relate.  Its really easy to let your personal fitness goals fall by the wayside when you are busy in your Real Estate career.  We have strange hours sometimes, and it is difficult to put together a schedule.  However, I found that time-blocking is the best way for me to do this.  Instead of waking up and going from one task to the next, I sit down each week to block my time.  I don't let anything else get in the way of that time.  It was very difficult to do at first, but I am just starting to ease in, and it is a much better experience.

Good luck to you- and thanks for having the courage to share with the "blogoverse"- it's never easy to tell folks that you aren't in the best 'battle trim'..(and I'm not either!). Thanks!

Hi Deidre-- I think this blog is an important one. I haven't seen a lot here on AR about how to be a healthy realtor! Thanks for sharing this.

Patrick - 5:30 is way too early!  I doing good to get myself out of bed at 6:30 to see the kids off to school :)  I wish I was more of an early morning person.

Lewis - Yes, I'm going to try that too.  Or at least have a snack with me so that I won't be tempted!

Matthew - You're right.  It's all about setting the time aside and then using it!

Pat, Loren, and Ilyce - Thanks for your comments.

Well soon the Title Companies will not be able to bring all the treats around the office. That should help

Tina -  We also need to stop someone (I'm not sure who the culprit is) from bringing the Krispy Kreme donuts to the sales meetings!
