I want to talk a little about safety, I was reading an article a while ago, about how we needed to take great measures in staying and being safe.
As a realtor you hardly think about safety because we focus on being the best at what we do and that is the best real estate agent we can be. However, it is a real concern that we need to dive more into, so here are some tipes to help along the way to showing houses but being safe at the same time.
1. Pre-qualify all your buyers, that way their identification and information will be noted.
2. Use the cell phone, before showing a home, make it known to your co- workers, a spouse or a friend as to where you are going and when you plan on being back. Have them call you at a designated time to check on you.
3. Use predetermined code words, such as green, yellow, and red. For example say something like " it's in the green folder", which will let the person on the other end of the phone know that you are fine. Yellow "It's in the yellow folder" Letting that person know to be alert that the situation is shaky and you might be in need of assistance. Red "It's in the red folder" is letting that person know that they need to call for help NOW! I would probably call for help even if the color folder is yellow, because you never know.
4. Take your own car, and by no mean should you have passengers. Have the buyer follow you, if they get upset about it, just simply say it's office policy for safty reasons. They shouldn't have a problem with that.
5. Don't wear expensive jewelry.
6. Pay attention to your intution. If your gut is telling you that something don't feel right, well then 9 times out of 10 it really isn't right.
7. Don't go to a listing alone (mainly for women) always have someone come with you to a listing.
8. Use the buddy system if possible. If not, then go for the throat, the eyes, the groin, if it's a man, and the instep of the foot if they grab you from behind.
