Thursday Throwdown

By
Mortgage and Lending with Guild Mortgage Co - Oak Harbor WA

My bro, Jason Sardi, does a fairly regular Friday RANT, so I thought I might try something of the same but I didn't want to take over his Friday....besides, we don't have a TGI Friday's in Eugene.

My big thing is that I don't understand what is happening with my blog. I really think I am writing some good, useful, informative stuff and getting a number of people dropping by to see it, but very few comments and it makes me wonder why? I respond to every comment...right or wrong? One of the most comments I have received was on the Hope for Homeowners, H4H, and most of that was between Jeff Belonger and me.

I have 34 subscribers (changed to 35 while I was typing this, :-D), not a large number, but some really knowlegable and prolific bloggers in the mix. I have subscribed to 122 blogs and about 40 of them blog nearly every day, another 40 blog weekly or so and the rest are sporadic bloggers. I am always looking for more information to make my blog more interesting, but mostly, I am looking for information that will help my readers make sense of this financial market. And I try to add humor and local information. Most of my local posts are relatively well received and the humor generally has some comments.

I guess my question has to do with what am I doing wrong? Or am I doing something wrong? Do others have the same problems getting response/feedback to their posts? Is it mostly due to limited action in my county on A/R? There are 244 people signed up in Lane County with Active Rain, but of the top 10, only three of us are active bloggers. And, in the top 5, I am the only one to post more than one blog in the past two months. Two of them haven't posted since April. What does that mean?

There are some fairly new members (like me) that are moving up rapidly, but why aren't we more involved in Lane County? There are great people in this county that know what they are doing in the Real Estate business. Why aren't they out there sharing more? What can I do to get them more involved? Can I start a conversation with this one? It is possible I have used too many smiley faces? Are my posts less interesting than I think they are? Have I answered every question that someone has in my original post that they have no need to comment? LOL

The main reason I blog is to eventually generate business for me though contacts made as a result of the content I generated. If my content is not adequate, I need to know that so I can fix it. If it is, it would be helpful to know that also. I am getting Google juice, I can see that, but is the content sufficient to make people call me?

Last rant and then I am gone (maybe I write too much at a time?). When are we going to get rid of the "Proxy Errors?"

There is a tremendous amount of great information here. Thanks for taking a moment to review this Thursday Throwdown. (I named it that in honor of Jason, the former wrestler.)

Fred - Well your rants are much more tame than mine, which is probably a good thing.  I'm sure a lot of factors come into play in regards to garnering comments and as a chap who has had my share of notoriety and popularity on here, I will simply say that it all depends on your primary objective in posting.  Sometimes I post for me, sometimes I post for consumers, sometimes I post for fellow industry professionals, and sometimes I don't have a clue of why I post.  I'd rather have business from my blog than comments or gold stars.  Though, if you can have it all... that is certainly ideal.  I think Jeff brings up a good point in posting several times a day (probably not the best way to go about it) and Michelle certainly has point in some of the more popular bloggers writing crap.  After all, look at me;)

Be true to yourself and continue to provide quality content and the rest usually takes care of itself.  I think you are doing just fine.

Jason - Tameness comes with wisdom and age young grasshopper.  You definitely have a different form of posting, but I enjoy all forms, even the ones that I have no clue as to why. I will probably cut my blogs back to no more than one a day, darn there go those valuable points, lol. And here I was saving up for a new toaster.

Thank you the kind words, I would expect no less since I am going to be the flower girl at your wedding. Have a wonderful weekend.

Fred, my friend, my advice to you is simple. As long as you are getting page views and clicks, then the comments is the least of your worries. I have 3 outside blogs and typically I get maybe 2 comments on them. If I were to get more, I would consider myself lucky.

As for the comments here. Engage your readers in your post. Close out with a call to action.

I think you have hit on my weak point Danny. I need to get my outside blogs up and running. My corporate website isn't enough either. I know that what I need to do, I just need to do it. A/R is giving me juice, but I need more action from it. Closing with a call to action is an excellent idea.

I wondered if anyone was ever going to address that comment Molly. Kind of the way I feel. You know you can get almost all the smilies you want from the Microsoft Office website (free) but then you have to convert them to jpeg.

I am not an AR member, yet I am a blogger. My field of expertise is very specific therefore I target a very small audience. My readership grows fast and, considering that my niche is quite small, I would say my blog is very successful.

Since I don't belong to any network, I consider getting comments (even if only 2) on each of my posts is quite an achievement. And I know that, when people do leave comments, it's because they have something "insightful" to say...

Here, I think it is about popularity. There are "cliques" and they visit each other's blog... but, do they actually read the posts? I don't think comments such as "you're great", "you're awesome", you're incredible", "you're one of a kind", etc. bring anything substantial. Don't measure your professional success through comments (most of them mean nothing). It reminds me of high school... remember the most popular fellows? I wonder if they became achievers... personally, the ones I know from that time did not...

Keep on providing accurate and useful info and don't be concerned with comments... it doesn't mean people are not reading your posts and getting the info they're looking for! BTW, I read a couple of your posts and they aren't crap, so... Smile :-)

Lori - "They aren't crap.." High praise indeed. LOL. Very interesting take on comments, and I think you are probably right in many respects, however, I have noticed that several of the "popular" bloggers are so because of their content. Do they pull in useless comments, sure, but they most often bring in useful comments too. That you for this comment, it is far more useful than "your awesome."

Fred,

Are you kidding? You're not doing "anything wrong!" I love your blogs man! They're very educational for me.

The issue with AR is that most folks blog about the same thing or lack content and quality. I by no means am trying to sound like Mr. Blogger, but I get the responses that I get because to be quite honest, I don't blog well about comps, interest rates and foreclosures. I do that stuff better in person. Well maybe no about interest rates. I use AR for fun mostly. Unproductive to many, but not me. I enjoy what I do hear and that's all that matters - YOU should do the same and when you do the comments, replies and such will take care of themselves.

All the best.

Greg - I know your blogs are always full of fun or full of something. My niche seems to be more educational and I keep trying to bring new things (some of them old/new things) and I appreciate that I am hitting that mark with you.

Hey Fred,

If I had the answers to your questions, I'd bottle it, sell it on QVC and make millions! Since that's not going to happen the only thing I can really offer is the fact that you are not alone. Like you, I try to write about things of substance. I'll throw in some fluff now and then, but generally, I try write things that are current and meaningful. But my statistics are abysmal. I've had one featured post which was pretty cool, but many times I'm left scratching my head and wondering what I'm not doing right. I see posts that are, frankly, just stupid. Yet, there they are with a gazillion comments. I dunno...I think there are groupies...people that know each other and they comment on each other's post.

Adding to my frustration is a guy in our market that does rentals. Mostly low income type of housing...for which there is a need for sure. But all he ever posts are ads for his rental business. Over and over and over. Never gets any comments. Yet he gets the same core points that you and I and other bloggers who take the time and effort to write something meaningful. But regardless of the points and the comments, my blog consistently shows up in the top 3 pages of a google search about our area. And that, to me, is a lot more important than the number of people who bother to comment on anything I have to say.  Except you! LOL  Your comments always matter to me!

Oh well...it's a beautiful day here in the mountains and for that, I am blessed.

Carol

Carol - I will say that I am very pleased with the comments that I have received on this post. It has mostly been very positive and re-enforces my attitude about substance. Yes, I read and comment on your posts, because I like and appreciate the content. Nearly everyone I have had comment here, I subscribe to their blogs because there is excellent content on them. I have also re-blogged several of them in the past and been especially greatful when they re-blogged my content.

The google juice I get from consistant blogging has been wonderful, although the calls I have gotten from it so far has been kind of strange. I will keep trying there also.

Jason - I don't expect you to ever get tame, but mellow a bit maybe. We need your "sort of" warped way of looking at things. You can only see the truth while looking at it three dimensionally.

Thanks Gary. That has become apparent by the comments here. I have learned a lot from what people had to say and found new purpose for my blogs.

Keep doing your thing, Fred.  I do learn, believe it or not.  You are more read than you tangibly know.  Take comfort in your words, not the comments about them.

Did you know Jason, that song came out the year I joined the Air Force? In case you were wondering that wasn't a good time to be 18. It was hard to be mellow waiting for the draft. Thanks for being mellow my brother.
