Passengers in the Yellow SUV -- STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR...

...The police helicoptor flying overhead in circles above my FJ cruiser was issuing a command through a bullhorn as my oldest son and I were talking to each other yesterday in the late afternoon.  We didnt have a clue as to what was going on but we KNEW we were the only ones in a yellow SUV in that area.  We both got out with our hands raised and were given further commands to walk up the hill to officers who were coming down to meet us.  Two police cars came down the hill and 3 officers stepped out with weapons raised.

"Do you have any firearms on you or in your vehicle" asked the officer.  "No" I replied, "I have a permit to carry concealed but I dont have my gun with me today."

After questioning us for a few minutes and searching my vehicle for weapons it turned out  there was a report of someone shooting in the area.  Well, we KNEW that was the case because we were out on the far edge of the bluff a little earlier and shots rang out VERY CLOSE to us and scared the BEEJEEBIES out of us so we decided not to hang around since we could not see where the person was who was firing, what he was firing with, and what direction he was aiming.

I have to say that the Fresno Police were very professional in the way the handled themselves and even though it was an extemely uncomfortable occurence and their guns were drawn, they didnt behave in anyway that made me feel threatened.

Here is one of the pics I took with the camera I was armed with.

We were parked in the flat area near the center of the image where the dirt road goes up the hill.

Nice photo. Your story reminds me of one that happened to a friend several years ago. While driving on the streets of Atlanta he was pulled over and surrounded by police with guns drawn. They thought he was a bank robber. Lucky you weren't "packing."

Now that would scare the daylights out of me! Did you use picnik to tweak your photo? I like that edge feature too.

You should of asked the police officers to take a photo of you in handcuffs.  They probably would of said no but it was the least they could do since you probably had it in your mind that you were going to blog about it.

Great story - I'm glad you were treated well, and that's an impressive police response!

Hey Randy,

Interesting and scary at the same time. Glad to hear you're both o.k.

I know what that's like, it happened to me years ago it began with a traffic stop. Quickly guns were drawn, we were placed on the ground and handcuffed. Later released, mistaken identity. I was shaking all the way home afterwards.  It happens.

I can imagine it was a very unsettling experience. Nice to hear you feel like the officials handled them selves appropriately.

John - my son said the same thing: 'Lucky you weren't "packing."'

I would have just kept my hands raised, told them where the gun was, told them to take my wallet out and they would find my permit to carry.

BUT --- it would have complicated the matter inasmuch as I would have to convince them that it wasnt me that fired the rounds.

OTOH --- the entire situation would have probably been different because if I HAD my gun I may not have left the area.

So - I think you're right -- better that I didnt have then.

OTHRERS -- thanks for the comments :)
