The Best Ruby Tuesday in Northern Virginia

I have had more than my share of disappointment from the Ruby Tuesday restaurant chain.  I live closest to the Gainesville location, and not too far from the Manassas location.  Since these are close, I go there when I want a rather guilt-free meal out (I love a salad bar).  However, I always end up disappointed.

Last night my husband and I were out and about in the Chantilly area for an event.  Afterward, we were starving, and decided to stop by (begrudgingly) to Ruby Tuesday in South Riding.  Again, our expectations are usually set very low...so we weren't exactly looking forward to it, but knew we wouldn't leave hungry.

WOW!  This location of Ruby Tuesday is OUTSTANDING!  It started with the staff.  Geniunely friendly and happy to help.  They didn't seem put out at all that we were showing up there at 9pm.

The restaurant was IMMACULATE.  The salad bar was delicious, and well stocked.  And something in particular my husband and I both noticed about the salad bar...the plates were SPARKLING CLEAN.  No smudges or funky dishwasher discolorations.  (I told you our expectations have been set to low with this chain).

The food was EXACTLY AS WE ORDERED.  (Everytime my husband orders the Triple Prime Cheddar burger in Gainesville, it is served with a lack of cheese.  It's become a bit of a joke.)  It was visually appealing, and served piping hot.

At the end of the meal we asked for the manager and told him just how surprised we were at the level of service and quality of food.  He had come from other Ruby Tuesday restaurants in the area and knew what we were talking about.

As a total side note, the restaurant was a NO SMOKING establishment.  I must say, that was the icing on the cake.  The food tastes so much better when you are a non-smoker and not having to inhale other people's smoke.  I wish Prince William County would get on board with NO SMOKING in restaurants.   The Gainesville location that we ocassionally go to has a smoking area in the center of the restaurant...not walled off or anything...so the whole places reeks of smoke.

If you've had similar disappointments with Ruby Tuesday, please stop by the South Riding location.  Their address is 25036 Riding Plaza, Chantilly, VA 20152.  Phone number is 703-327-2982.  It is worth the drive.

Our cities generally have a no smoking ordinance now in restaurants, but not bars . It is complex....but like you we really enjoy our meals without smoke unless of course it is from the BBQ pits! :)

Chris Ann, South Riding RULES!! I love it when any of us gets a GREAT dining experience. It's also tremendous you promoted them here. We all in business need some appreciative customer testimonials.

Trey: Virginia being a tobacco state, I'm surprised we have NO SMOKING restaurants at all.  My County, Prince William, is what we call a GOOD OLE BOY county.  Not likely to upset the apple cart with the no smoking ordinances.

Gary:  Having been in customer service since I can remember, I think it's important to share the great experiences, as well as the bad.  Managers need to hear when they are doing things right too.  The restaurant industry can be brutal.

I applaud you and your husband for letting the manager know some good news.  Most people will go out of their way to complain, but rare few go out of their way to give kuddos!

Chris Ann:  I do not know if it is still there... but the last time I was at a Ruby Tuesdays in Northern Virginia was at... I think... Fair Oaks Mall.  It was a Friday... and a friend and I had just come from an afternoon costume party at Winchester Homes.  This was in the Fall of 1987.  We were all in costume... and I went dressed as a nun... in full nun habit and attire... complete with the nun-type glasses, and the foot long wooden ruler to smack peoples knuckles with.

My friend and I were sitting at the bar... if you can imagine the afternoon construction crews coming in for a "brew" and finding this nun there... sipping on a class of White Zinfandel.  Oh well... it was a great and fun afternoon... just another one of my fond memories from Living in Northern Virginia.

Karen:  I think you are remembering Bennigans.  But it has been replaced by a Cheesecake Factory..still haven't had the chance to try that place out.

Hi Chris Ann: All California restaurants are nonsmoking, and it's great.

I rarely eat at chain restaurants, though, because the food is typically ordinary.

Elizabeth:  In most of our areas, chains are all we have to choose from.  :(  The independents either can't afford to get started here or they don't get the business to support it.
