Elected Officials Love to Waste Money

By

In this economic climate where people are struggling to maintain their meager existence the elected officials still are not able to comprehend controlling cost.  Today I received this flyer and although I have forgotten most of the Spanish I learned back in high school I can understand the message.  Fill in the ellipse and slide it into the machine.

Unfortunately we the taxpayers of Connecticut must watch our money be wasted so Susan Bysiewicz can increase her facial recognition among foreigners.

I assume all these immigrants she is trying to entice into registering to vote are U.S. Citizens so why not require them to have a basic understanding of our language instead of wasting our money providing government forms in their native tongue.

This is the same woman that had a hissy fit because the VA hospital wouldn't allow her to go in and hound patients so she decided the best use of her taxpayer paid salary was to stand outside of the VA and bother outgoing veterans. She felt proud that 10 were willing to fill out her form.  Back at the office she continued to waste time and money by getting her buddy Blumenthal to fight the feds.

Spend... Spend... Spend.... What difference does a few more pesos make when it's not your money!

An element of this issue is on our ballot this election - we've had enough of our tax dollars being spent on accommodating other languages. If you want to be an American, make an effort to learn the language. It's shocking how much it costs to have everything translated into dozens of other languages. We're learning that in too many cases, they don't learn if they don't have to.

With the State of Connecticut currently 300 million over budget this year and the gap expected to widen before the end of the fiscal year, I would think they could think of better things to spend money on.

Jennifer... I think they will start to wise up in the next few years. In our business we have witnessed the tightening of consumer spending first hand and trickle down effect will hit the government when people can no longer afford to pay the outrageous property taxes.  Currently the taxes on my home are 1/3 of my monthly payment and my mortgage is fairly low compared to many people.

Sandra... 300 million or half a billion it's just a fictional number to the politicians.

it just amazes me - I wonder - what if someone running for office - did nothing but free advertising - and used all that money to help the poor - bet the word of mouth - the blog they would have would put them light years ahead -

Craig... Hope you recover quick!   Leaning towards Miami in the end of January if you are up for another Marathon.

Renee... Should a hot married lady like you be kissing those foreigners?   Keep it simple.... try a handshake!

Just a quick reminder to all, there are some American citizens for whom English is not their first language (mainly from the US Territories Puerto Rico, Guam and Northern Mariana Islands) and they have equal rights as their English speaking counterparts last time I checked. They work and pay taxes just like you do. As I was blessed with prodigious education, I am able to fully speak, read and write both Spanish and English and read Italian and Portuguese but many of my fellow Islanders know only broken English. Is that reason enough to not service them?

I guess I could then argue that every voting pamphlet produced for English-speaking American citizens in Puerto Rico, to give an example I know and understand well, is then also a waste of time.

Nadya..... Maybe times have changed over the years but my understanding is the U.S. Territories have stayed that was so they can have all the benefits of U.S. Citizenship without the tax burden that we pay.

That may be so for those who still live in the territories, but not for me or others that live in the mainland (who are the ones targeted by the campaign you referred to in your original post). Last time I checked, I payed taxes just like you and Mom do.

Many of the territories, such as PR, which were acquired ages ago (110 years for PR) don't know anything else (government wise) and self determination hasn't been encouraged by the mainland (and if we were as disposable as many seem to think, I don't think we would still be a territory). Besides, their political status has nothing to do with the validity of their American citizenship (which was given to Puerto Ricans in 1917 by the Jones Law). I am just as much an American citizen as you are, and to insinuate that anyone of my background needs to speak English as a requirement to live up to their citizenship (even when there is NO official language for the US and we were acquired as war loot) is bigotry. The history of the territories is not black and white, not by far.

I am proud of being Puerto Rican and proud to be an American citizen, realizing and thanking every day for all the advantages said citizenship has brought me.

Nadya... Unfortunately the Spanish speaking population living on the mainland were not targeted by this massive spending campaign and therein lies my point.  This mailing, all the television air time and the paid elected officials that spent months touting this message to the masses were plain and simply wasting taxpayer money.  There are not many people I know regardless of spoken language that cannot comprehend the concept of coloring in the ovals.  If the instructions on how to vote are difficult how qualified are these people to make a judgment as to who should be running the country?  From my viewpoint the warm bodies should not be coaxed into the voting booth to sway the results.  Typically the people that need this type of assistance are the ones milking the system and contributing nothing in the way of tax revenue.

Bigotry quite frankly is bullshit! Every group that wants specialty treatment cries that they have been fouled by the white man. In my years I have seen plenty of reverse discrimination but in our society that is considered acceptable.
