The Social Networking Buzz: Getting Started

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gallery

Last month I signed up for the first Social Media webinar series from the Domus Consulting Group mentioned on the ActiveRain network.

I had a website, I'd been blogging over the years, and even had profiles on Facebook and LinkedIn. What I didn't get was how to leverage that presence and take it to the next level...Web 2.0 or social networking.

What is social networking? Here's a quick Common Craft video overview:

So the shocking thing I learned in the first class? Email is for people over 30. That made me feel really old.

I was even more surprised to talk to a couple of 20-somethings and find out they don't even have email. The MySpace generation primarily relies on text mesages and notes on a friend's online wall.

First assignment: sign in and check out Twitter, something else I just didn't get

Crazy, isn't it? I couldn't believe it either, but I've since talked to agents who have had clients they only texted. Also many agents are beginning to advertise "text me" to draw in that demographic.

I guess the lesson is that we have to adapt...and get used to texting

Debra,

You have once again broadened my horizon!  Emails for over 30?, hum.   Guess I must explore Twitter as I have learned that the older 20's have money either thru inheritance from grandparents, the boomer, or from technology high-paying jobs.  Maybe that's a reason to get a blackberry as I've been trying to find one.   My cell phone works good, but I don't have a cell internet address.  maybe Twitter will give me some clues.  Nice post.

My problem with twitter is that all I ever end up with is talking to other agents. This is fine for networking but I really want to connect with people in my community.  Suprisingly, not that many converse on Twitter....we are right outside NYC...you would think with blackberry/iphone frenzy going on that Twitter and my blog would be crack-cocaine for younger buyers - sadly, it hasn't happened that way.

Ann - Yes, you should really explore getting a smartphone. I just got a Blackberry Curve and I LOVE it!

Ruthmarie - It's my understanding Twitter is just starting to catch on. Seems like if you hang with it, you'll be ahead of the wave.

Gee Dunsten has been teaching Generational Marketing and I heard him at CRS Sellabration this year.  Gee shares some very good insight on this topic and how we need to relates to our more youthful generations.

Eileen - Somehow, I think we'll be doing a lot more of it!

Sam - That's interesting and totally dovetails with this trend. We will be left behind if we don't adapt.

Wow, I really enjoy the You Tube Common Craft videos.  They truly simplify the whole social networking stuff, and put it into laymans terms.  Even I can start to understand it!

Wow...

I just put up our the Myrtle Beach area social network for all things Myrtle Beach.  It is supposed to be a place where locals, tourists and businesses can connect.

I am now wondering if I invested wisely?
