country tavern   If you want to have a hauntingly delicious meal you have come to the right place

The Country Tavern Restaurant in Nashua, New Hampshire is a beautifully restored farmhouse which was built in 1741.

I have eaten at the Country Tavern many times, and the food always is prepared to order and it is delicious!  I love the Old Country Charm of the restaurant and the attentive staff!  My favorite time to eat at the restaurant is around Halloween!

At the Country Tavern you can enjoy a delicious entrée accented with locally grown vegetables and fruits, along with a side of "spirits" of the ghostly kind!

It has been well documented that Elizabeth Ford haunts the Country Tavern Restaurant, even to this day!

So, on the eve of Halloween, once again, it is appropriate to recite the tragic tale of Elizabeth Ford.

Elizabeth, a beautiful 22 year old woman married an English sea captain who was many years her senior.  Captain Ford was gone for many months at a time.  After an extended time away at sea, he returned to Nashua and was surprised to find that his wife had given birth.  He knew it could not be his child and he flew into a rage!

Captain Ford locked Elizabeth in a closet to punish her.  It is reported that he killed the baby and buried her on the property where the Country Tavern stands today.

Elizabeth was released from the closet and when she learned of the death of her baby, she confronted Captain Ford, who then stabbed Elizabeth to death.  Allegedly, Captain Ford threw Elizabeth into an old well.               country tavern trees

For many years, there were tales that the house was haunted and that Elizabeth wandered through the property looking for her baby daughter.

The property was purchased in the 1980's and it was converted into a restaurant.

Soon after the restuarant opened, staff and patrons began noticing paranormal activity!  Some patrons reported that Elizabeth was very playful and liked to have some fun with the guests!   She often played with children who came to dine at the restaurant and would roll a ball back and forth on the floor.   Elizabeth also liked to redecorate the restaurant by moving things around on the display shelves.  She often moved dishes on the table while guests were enjoying a meal.

In a not so playful moment, Elizabeth has been reported to have thrown a coffee cup through the air, smashing it into the wall!

To no one's surprise, some guests did not find dining with ghosts appetizing and they left the restaurant when Elizabeth made an appearance!

The owner at the time was concerned about the reoccurring presence of Elizabeth and a séance was planned.  A psychic from Gloucester, MA arrived and to perform the séance.  Elizabeth make an appearance and it was hoped that her spirit would be released from the house and she could be at rest.

Come out ElizabethHowever, after the séance, rumors continued that Elizabeth either did not leave or that Elizabeth had come back!

In 1993 "Hard Copy" paid a visit to the Country Tavern.  During a séance Elizabeth appeared again!  "Unsolved Mysteries" also looked into the fate of Elizabeth.

Today guests and staff report taht Elizabeth has been seen in the dining room, peering into windows after hours and in the women's restroom.  She is reported to have long white hair and is clothed in a flowing white dress with blue rippons!  Some have heard the baby crying!

   elizabeth rearranges things

I recently stopped by the Country Tavern to talk with the current owner, Camille Lebbos and ask him confirm rumors that there had been  continued visits by Elizabeth.

Camille would not confirm or deny if Elizabeth was still haunting the restaurant - and invited me to come again to see for myself ... perhaps on Halloween, he said, with a mischievies twinkle in his eyes ... Elizabeth has been known to make an appearance!

JOAN  I believe Elizabeth is still around. There's been too many incidents documented. I meant we won't know the truth about her disappearance and her daughter.  I'm surprised she's EVER in a good mood. Keep us posted on your Halloween visit. Like you said, hopefully it'll be a favorable one. :)

Karen~  Just wondering if you have any haunted houses in Ann Arbor.  It looks like from what I have read so far, the this restaurant/home is haunted!  I am going to have to get up my nerve when I visit on Halloween!

Chuck~   You really made me laugh!  The food here is so delicious -- I think I could stand a little side of spirits with my meal!  I think it is great that they use local produce!  I know they have had some challenges with the slower economy and I hope they have continued success.

Trunda~  You are so right!   I can't imagine how horrible it was for her.  I can only imagine her pain when she discovered her husband had killed her new born child!  There was one reported story that Elizabeth intervened when a small child was at the restaurant and got a hold of a sharp knife and was about to injure himself.  Elizabeth flung the knife away and the boy was not harmed.  The mom saw a "woman" in a fleeting moment when the knife flew into the air, however, when she tried to find her in the restaurant to than her, "Elizabeth" could not be found!  I'm certainly keeping my eyes and ears open.

Joan, I would love to visit this place in Nashua.  I have had so many clients tell me they have hauntings and I have heard and seen some myself while in their homes.  It's one of the reasons we do clearings.  I don't doubt hauntings EVER.

Carole~  I think that the Country Tavern may need a clearing.  What do you think?  On the other hand, perhaps, the presence of Elizabeth is good for the owner.  I guess this is not so staight forward.  What do you think would help Elizabeth?

We've got a famouse haunted hotel room at the world-famous Hotel del Coronado here. Some day I would like to stay in the room, but the Hotel del is typically not in my $$$$ range for one-night stands. LOL

Russel~  I know exactly which hotel you are referring to and it is $$$$$$$$$~  I didn't know they had a haunted room there!  I wish I could say next time in the area I'll rent the room at the del Coronado and we could have an Active Rain event, but unless I win the lottery, it isn't likely.

UPDATE --  I stayed at the restuarant for some time waiting for Elizabeth to appear!  However, I had volunteered for the Pet Wellness Festival and finally had to leave without seeing Elizabeth.  I guess I will have to visit the Country Tavern at another time to see if she is still frequenting the restaurant.

What an interesting story. I love stuff like this. Also its funny because in Austin we also have a place called The Tavern. It is very old and was the first public place in Austin to have air conditioning!! Oh yes  it is also reportedly haunted......

;)

Betina ~  I love the old homes and buildings throughout New England.  It seems like just about everything has a story.  I wasn't aware that Austin had a haunted Tavern -- I'll have to check it out next time I am in the Austin area.
