The Colorado River - Where does it Originate?

By
Real Estate Agent with DISCOVER TEXAS HOMES

There are 3,700 named streams and 15 major rivers that meander through 191,000 miles of Texas Landscape. The Colorado River one of the major rivers of Texas, it is the longest river in Texas and the 18th longest river in the United States. Named for the reddish color of the water. Colorado in Spanish is "Colored Red". However as the river enters the Highland lakes in Central Texas it begins to lose it's color until finally when it exits the 7th lake in Austin it no longer has it's reddish color. The river flows and winds thru 862 miles of Texas terrain before entering the Gulf of Mexico.

The Colorado River in Texas comes nowhere near the state of Colorado. It is a completely different river originating in Colorado City Texas. Along it's banks it is known as a sanctuary for Bald Eagles. The waterfall is in the Canyon of the eagles.

You can take a boat trip on the Vanishing River Cruise. Just click here. http://www.vtrc.com/

Eric, a few years ago I was watching "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". One of the questions was what body of water does the Colorado River flow into. None of the answers said the Gulf of Mexico. So like most people who think this river originates in Colorado State. I researched it and discovered otherwise!

Danny assume shots!  I just read this to my son, he loves history and geography and appreciated your explanation of the meaning of Colorado.  Thank you for reminding me that the Colorado river is in Texas not Colorado.

Kaye, Texas is a big state! It has a variety of topography. It has areas that are heavily wooded to areas that are arid. Once I drove from Port Arthur TX to Lubbock TX non-stop and it took me 13.5 hours to arrive in Lubbock.
