Romero Britto - The Hug

Today I started thinking about art in Miami and the first name that came to mind was Romero Britto.  It's very difficult to drive around Miami without seeing one of his works.  So who is this guy anyway?  Romero Britto is an extremely talented pop artist born in Brazil in 1963 who now lives in Miami.

One of the best articles I found is by Alex Williams of the New York Times, who describes how Britto's work is found everywhere, including Gloria Estefan's home in Star Island, Fort Lauderdale Buses, Miami Children's Museum, housing complexes, parks, and Metro-Rail stations, to name a few.  (I even have a signed lithograph in my dining room! - but Alex doesn't mention that in his article).

OctoberGallery.com  makes great mention of Britto including his numerous charitable donations "marked by his experiences amongst the Brazilian poor".

Chosen by the Division of Cultural Affairs to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Secretary of State Sue M. Cobb announces "Romero Britto is a wonderfully talented artist and a state treasure. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to exhibit his work in our Capitol."

Britto has designed murals for buildings, posters for events, Absolute Vodka bottles, the Hurricane Katrina Logo Advertisement, Disney Posters, Beaujolais Nouveau wine labels, and even a VOLVO paint job.

South Florida CEO had a great article indentifying different power figures, in which Britto's art is described to "project an image of South Florida to the world".

And lastly....don't miss THIS video by CBS-4's Lisa Petrillo about Britto's design for The Superbowl's backstage and pre-game show, including the set and costumes for Cirque du Soleil.

I guarantee that the next time you are driving in Miami, you will see Britto's work, all you have to do is open your eyes, Britto is everywhere!

Ann - you are right - this is one of the most common types of posts we use here in AR.

Bob - I wanted to do a true MIAMI ARTIST that people in other places may not have known about.  And this guy is famous and is only 42 year old....and down to earth.

Monika - I do too....I really like his use of colors, some people even think it's a little "childish"

TLW - LOVED your explanation.....and noooo no need to be intimidated!

Danny - you CAN afford it, I have that signed lithograph in my dining room.....you don't need an original, do you?  He has a gallery on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach that has all kinds of things at all kinds of price levels - some people think that he is too "commercialized", I think the guy is not only creative, but has fantastic business sense!

Ines, I don't think I could see myself riding around in that car, but I do like all the other examples of his work that you are showing.

And of course you did an excellent job with the blog.

Hi Carole - thanks for stopping by - since you are a Feng Shui consultant and I do use Feng Shui principles, you would be glad to know that I have used Britto's art to add color where necessary - instead of using walls or furniture (especially for homes on the market).  I am sure your "budding artist" will know about Britto.

Artist Romero Britto was arrested Thursday morning for allegedly driving under the influence on Miami Beach.

Miami-Dade Corrections/CBS

Miami pop artist Romero Britto bonded out of jail Thursday night after being arrested and accused of DUI in Miami Beach earlier in the morning.

According to the Miami Beach police report, Britto was pulled over shortly after 3:00 a.m. in the 500 block of Washington Avenue while driving his black Bentley. The report also indicated he was given a breathalyzer test and blew a .161 and .158 which is twice the legal limit of .08. This information was confirmed by Jenny Velazquez of the Miami Beach Police Department.

"I feel very embarrassed about the whole thing; l think drinking is not good," said Britto. "I had a few drinks, and that's what happened."

The police report states that arresting officer, P. Socarras, witnessed Britto weaving while driving in the southbound lanes of Washington Avenue.

Socarras wrote in his report that Britto "crossed into the left lane on three separate occasions and on the third time almost struck another vehicle which was in that lane." Britto also "drifted into the right lane almost striking a parking vehicle," states the report.

After pulling Britto over, Officer Socarras described Britto as having "a flushed face, bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath."

In addition, the report states "he did not perform to standards" in a roadside sobriety test. Britto even stated to the officer at one point, "Officer, I live across the bridge, give me a break."

Britto was arrested on the scene and transported to the Miami Beach Police Department for further processing.

Britto's artwork can be seen throughout South Florida.

I have no idea what this has to do with Britto's art - I deleted the same comment from Miamism because there is no need to smear someone's name like that.
