Everyone wants to have a safe and happy Halloween for themselves, guests, children and their pets. Using safety tips and common sense can help you make the most of Halloween and make it as enjoyable for your kids and pets as it is for you!
Let us make it a fun Halloween without trouble by following some easy tips to keep your pet safe.
- Think twice about dressing your pet in a costume. Many pets do not like to be dressed up in costumes. If you do decide to dress up your pet to go trick or treating, make sure the costume does not cause discomfort to the pet.
- Be prepared. If you go trick or treating with your pet, please be sure that the pet is on a leash, wearing an ID tag, and that you are very mindful of the folks in costumes you may run-into, as they might frighten your pet. A good practice for you when you sense your pet is stressed, or anxious is to walk-around people on the sidewalk vs. walking directly into their path.
- Do not leave your pet outside and unattended on Halloween. Halloween pranks committed against pets can be vicious. If you are not taking your pet trick or treating, keep the pet in a separate room, away from the door so that your pet doesn't suddenly head for the great outdoors or get frightened by the strangers in different costumes.
- Keep candy away from your pet. Halloween sweet treats are for people, not pets. Keep the candy wrappers and lollipop sticks away from the pet. Sticks are hazardous and chocolate is deadly. How nice would it be if someone would bring a treat for your pet? May be it is a new tradition you can start.
- Protect pets from candles and pumpkins. Do not leave any lit candles or jack-o-lanterns where your pet can knock them down and cause a fire.
- Have fun but think of your pet's safety. Finally, if you want your pet to be included in Halloween festivities, think about the pet's safety much as you would the safety of a small child. Your pet does not understand Halloween, and needs you to provide the guidance and safety that you always do.
