Lexington County South Carolina
2 weeks ago the new smoking ban law went into effect for all of Lexington County SC and last night the council retreated on its decision. There must have been a myriad of complaints form local bar and restaurant owners voiced during the last 2 week. I have talked with several business owners that have told me they have already seen a decline in revenue form the councils actions. Particularly the Bar's restaurant combination owners. "In a time when eating out is already one of the luxuries that consumers cut back on its not the time to muddy the water on our patrons" one owner told me.
Four of our local city governments have adopted a smoking ban in recent months after County Council failed for months to bring the issue to a vote. Columbia, Richland County and the towns of Lexington and also Camden in Kershaw County. West Columbia is considering one and Irmo has rejected a ban all together.
For now owners are required to post a sign alerting customers of there smoking policy. More debate and talk are sure to come. I say let us decide it in the next polls and see what our community as a whole has to say instead of letting a few decide the fate of this law. Isnt that what our government is set up for?
