ActiveRain Helps Develop Real Friendships! My Lunch with Paul Slaybaugh (and our families)

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Austin Texas Homes, LLC 453249

When I started on ActiveRain almost 16 months ago, I was surprised to find so many like-minded souls here.  One of the first friends I made was Paul Slaybaugh, and although we never met in person before this past week, I had already come to consider him one of my best friends.

He's a good dad and dedicated husband, and he is one of the funniest people I know, with a crazy/wicked sense of humor.  My conference calls with him and Adam Waldman often devolve into the type of laughter that I remember from my junior-high days.  You know, when you have milk coming out of your nose?  That kind.

Needless to say, when I heard that he and his family were going to be in Houston, I was excited to finally meet him in person.  As it turned out, it was just after the RE Barcamp event in Houston, so I was able to spend several days in that area and meet many of my other AR friends, too.  Bonus!

As Paul put it on his comment on my post about Barcamp, "Not a bad looking warm-up band."

My wife Pam (who is pretty darn witty herself) couldn't help teasing me when we were on the way to Paul's grandparents' house to meet:

"Maybe you guys can run into each other's arms in slow motion across a meadow, with the sun dappling on the lens like in those 70's movies."  Thanks, honey.  Thanks a lot.  :)

Actually, it wasn't quite that dramatic - sorry if I let you down.  However, I did get a chance to meet FOUR GENERATIONS of Slaybaughs that day before we went to lunch.  Pam and I talked about this when we were driving to lunch, and we both agreed that we envied Paul for his super-nice and welcoming family, including his grandparents, dad, sister, and brother-in-law.  Very special people.  Then again, I guess they have to be pretty nice to keep Paul around, right?

Paul and I took our wives and children to the Rainforest Cafe in Katy, Texas.  Even though it was my idea (found it online), it turned out to be better than I expected.  It was the perfect place to have the kids along, because of the animatronic animals and the jungle theme.  The elephant was disturbingly realistic from a distance, but the giant butterfly with the 3-foot wingspan wasn't fooling any of us.

There was a brief awkward moment at the restaurant when our arch-nemesis Johnny Carwash showed up, but he was greeted with these glares of doom, and he fled quickly:

We shared a good laugh at his expense after that:

Of course, I am kidding.

This is an old inside joke.

Overall, we had a really nice afternoon, and Paul's wife, Brandi, was very cool indeed.  My son, Brandon, went sort of nuts and treated us to some great physical comedy, with terrific impressions of a gorilla and a somewhat nosy elephant who spent much of his time grabbing my hair with his "trunk".  I think he was also pretending to groom me for mites at one point.  Whatever.  He had a good time, and so did the rest of us.

Truthfully, it was very much like seeing a friend from school that I hadn't been around for a few years, which was terrific.

As my friend Amanda Hall explained during the conference we both attended one week ago, the connections and friendships made here on ActiveRain simply cannot be overestimated.

I have shared struggles, triumphs, tips, family stories, funny nonsense, and much more with my friends here.  I am eternally grateful for having found this unique network in the first place.  The support and close-knit nature is difficult to explain to "outsiders".

Paul - I look forward to our next get together!

Maybe I need to plan a trip to Scottsdale sometime.

PAT - My wife is frankly hilarious, which is one of a myriad of reasons that I married her in the first place.  Thanks for checking out this post!

TIMOTHY - I'm sure you can find some great folks in Oregon to get together with - good luck!

DAN - It was a blast, and I look forward to meeting more of my buddies from AR!

NEAL - It was a lot of fun that day, and we split the cost of the meal.

KRIS - I didn't even think about it until today, but I could have referred to this as the "ActiveRainforest Cafe".  My wife is feeling better overall, although she hurt her neck last week and still isn't 100%.  I think it was sleeping at the hotel and at my in-laws' house that started it.

I've been lucky enough to meet one Active Rainer who is outside my market.  She's a sweetie, Lisa, you know who you are.  I'm hoping to get to one of the various functions at some point.

Jason, I just knew your families would meld and melt into friendship. From what I've read of yours and Paul's you both have much in common. I'm so glad you had a wonderful time and I wish to meet Paul myself someday. Thanks for the great story and the wonderful pictures.

Hi Jason, great post.  I am laughing so hard right now.  I was reading this when my 20 year old who came home to early vote today... her college has no classes tomorrow (have you heard of the big annual cocktail party in Florida)  well my girl is  Georgia Dawg.  Anywho, she was reading over my shoulder and said... hey this "dude" is in Austin... tell him I'll be bunking with him if I do my internship next year at Apple in Austin.... So I'm just tellin' ya.  I know you don't like poor grammer and that was a huge run on sentence.  But, Jason, you have to forgive me this time.  I'm laughing too hard to think well.

I'm glad you had a great time and again you have a great looking family.

CYNTHIA - I couldn't agree more.  The friendships forged here are quite strong.  It really has been surprising to me as well.

JER - I'm sure your wife understands this reference!  As for what you have in common with Paul, why not just spill it, dude?  I wasn't really trying to look hardcore - just trying not to laugh.

RYAN - It was a great afternoon, and I look forward to seeing Paul and his family again sometime.  I consider him one of my best friends, frankly.

MISSY - Our wives got along really well, although they didn't get a chance to talk much one-on-one, since we had five children in tow.

NANCY - Good for you!  I would highly encourage you to do this.

DEBI - Pretty neat, huh?  Thanks for your comments!

PIPPA - We may actually be back in Houston next week, believe it or not.  If so, maybe we could grab some lunch and you could meet her.  I feel like I didn't get a chance to talk to you as much as I would have liked at Barcamp.

RYAN S - Nice catch.  I did actually end up on the left a couple of times!

BARB - Thanks for your kind words - I really appreciate what you had to say.  You're right - it was much as you described.

GARY - Thanks, man.  This was certainly worth the trip, and I will forever think of Rainforest Cafe as Activerainforest Cafe from now on!

KEVIN - Right you are.  It was a blast seeing Paul and family for the first time.

BILL - I'm sure you will get a chance to meet Paul someday.  What am I?  Chopped liver?  Of course, I am totally kidding.

LISA - Having a lot of kids around really doesn't phase me anymore, I guess.  Some of our best friends have five kids, so when they come over, it's.....active around here.

What a fun log/blog of your familys time together...it's so heartwarming to read about the meetings of AR friends, because I think we all, in our getting to know each other in webspace, know the thrill of actually meeting some of these wonderful people. I had that experience at Inman in July, and it was truly amazing. Thanks for capturing some of the joy and sharing it with us.

Looks like you had a great time Jason.  I have to tell you I took a family with my family to the Rain Forest Cafe at Disney World and the youngest was so scared of the rain storm that we almost did not get to eat there!  If anyone else is goingmake sure your party is prepared! LOL

Jason, this is yet another indication of what a good place Active rain is for establishing lasting friendships! The remarkable thing is that when we do finally meet our fellow members it reinforces the ides we have and have learned over time by posting, commenting and on the phone. I had no idea that Paul had Texas roots other than the fact that he attended TCU. Any way it's great seeing this and I am curious...who picked up the check!?!?! Have a great week and let's have lunch ourselves again sometime in the near future!

Hey Jason, I read a little bit about this over at Jeremy's post but missed this post completely.  You guys look like you had a blast and the kids certainly had a good time.  I think that you and Amanda are right, you can't put an accurate description to the friendships you can make here.  It's really astounding.  Yesterday, when AR was down, I was actually feeling pangs... "I wonder how everyone is"!!   I even sought some of then out on Facebook and C Tann Starr had me trying to figure out Twitter, which is still kind of a mystery to me.  This was a very nice post to read on a Monday morning.  Thanks Jason!
