Your own Email

I have heard a lot of talk about email addresses lately. A lot of people have the opinion that a email not connected to your broker is a good thing. Some of these people are commenting that you can get you own email at your own domain for 50.00 a year.

Well here is a less expensive solution. AOL offers a free email account at your selection of domain names. This sounds like a better way to go.

We all know how tight marketing money can be and why pay for something if you can get it for free?

Make Up Your Own Email Address With AOL® My eAddress

AOL is the first and only free email provider that lets you make up your own unique, personalized email address from scratch. Not just the part before the @ -- we're talking about the whole thing -- like you@thenameyouwant.com.

By choosing a custom domain (the part after the @ symbol), you could make up email addresses for your club, team, family or small business. If it's available, it's yours.

Invite up to 100 friends or family members to be a part of your domain -- so for example, your friend could have yourfriend@thenameyouwant.com. (Choose either a .com or .net suffix, whichever you prefer.)

Store up to 2GB of data per mailbox, enough to keep tons of old messages and attached files. You can also use your personalized email address to send and receive instant messages on AIM.

And it's easy to check your email from any Internet-connected computer on the AOL.com Web site, on either PC or Mac, or even from other email programs like Microsoft Outlook® or Outlook Express®.

My Internet Explorer shows this post, only this one, as a possible phishing site.

I know it is not. Could be some of the wording.

I reported it to MicroSoft as not a phishing site.

Ever see the commercials were AOL is bragging about blocking billions of emails? Some of those could be clients but you will never know because they delete them from the server and don't notify you. In this case free can be very expensive.

Because we are independent contractors and spend a considerable amount of money on "branding" having your own email account makes sense,  the good news is you can probably forward the aol to your company email if you want to keep down the number of locations you are storing and checking emails.  Convienience and efficiency are equally important as independence.

Sounds to me like they are just blocking spammers

I don't send any spam but they block some of the emails I send to their users without telling anyone. If I send an email to someone with an AOL account I have to follow up with a phone call to make sure they received it.

What is an invalid header?

So far all the computer and internet experts I know would not recommend AOL.  However I do agree that getting your own email is better than depending on the one your broker provided for you.  I would like to hear of an alternate option.

I always laugh to myself when I see an agent or a broker with a "@yahoo.com" or "@hotmail.com" or even "@gmail.com." It looks so unprofessional, and it also looks like you're too cheap to have a domain with an email address.

Also, I would never recommend AOL. I know of a lot of websites that permanently ban all traffic coming from AOL.
