Twitter Therapy .... the unexpected benefits of having "peeps"

I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined Twitter.  Even when I first joined, I was like..."so this is it?"  It's totally different than a lot of other social media in that it's a lot less self promotion than say Facebook or My Space, and instead, a very abbreviated chat area.  With lots and lots of people.... most of them, pretty fabulous.

Even in the less than 90 days I've been participating I have seen the business benefits.  I just received my first referral from a friend. Not just an agent, but a friend! How awesome is that? And I just set up 2 other friends who cover military bases, to potentially work together. Hopefully guaranteeing future referrals for me here in the Charlotte area, x's 2 !

But Twitter is so much more than just business or chatting....Twitter is all about you being you.  If it's all business; well that gets boring real quick. It won't work for you. Everyone does expect you to be brief, to the point, and hopefully witty... most of the time.  But on one those days where you really can't be.... it's ok.

Case in point: last Saturday, my precious 1 year old Jack Russell puppy, was tragically ran over. My "Peeps" were there for me... right on my phone.  I quickly asked my friends to pray.  Even though my "sweet" Dulce did not make it, you can not imagine how EXTREMELY GRATEFUL I was for knowing that my Twitter friends were there, praying for me, sending notes of encouragement, and sharing their similar stories.  It was very therapeutic, and feel that my emotional recovery is greatly owed to them (and to the Big Guy upstairs too, of course!).

Twitter also has helped me to realize I am not alone in this economic down turn. And in our business right now, we need some of that honesty.  Now I am NOT talking about big pity parties or constant griping... no one likes that.  But the encouragement from my industry colleagues is one of the biggest surprises to me.  And the genuine offer of tips, suggestions, and reviews - just incredible!

We have so many just super, nice people in our real estate industry, and you can truly see that in Twitterland.  And of course, sharing the great moments is the best, whether they be an awesome sale or a picture of their kid in a great Halloween costume. They make me put a smile on my face, laugh, keep blogging, keep working, and have hope.

If you decide to join, I highly encourage you to follow me at http://twitter.com/BeeRealty and feel free to browse my peeps, who are highly talented, motivated, and inspirational people.  It will be great for your business and your soul.

THANK YOU TWITS! You mean so much to me.  And I want all of you to know, I am here for you too. Together, we can get thru all of this, and isn't that awesome?

In Memory of my "Sweet" Dulce & in Gratefulness to my "Peeps" on Twitter.

Lori,

Thanks for the post. I read Jeff Turner's post today where he also mentioned twitter. I guess I will take the plunge and commit to yet another site.

Hi Lori - We've been following each other on Twitter, and now I just found you in the Rain! Very sorry to hear about Dulce. When my dog Sundance had his cancer surgery back in August, I tweeted updates for a few days and got a lot of support. Now he's 17 weeks past that and doing well. I think Twitter will bring me some great connections and opportunities in '09.
