East Norwich is one of the most sought after areas that people want to call home in the North Shore of Long Island. East Norwich is a very interesting place, small and charming and full of history. It is believed that George Washington stopped here during his journey to Long Island. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Walter Downing who just passed away on Oct. 18 at the age of 93 had a chair that belongs to the Downings' family and with a provenance that George Washington sat on it.
East Norwich lies between Muttontown and Oyster Bay. Though small, it does not lack the convenience of big town. It is located south of Oyster Bay, north and east of Muttontown and Brookville, and west of Oyster Bay Cove. East Norwich is a short driving distance to two railroad stations, the Oyster Bay Line and the Syosset Line.
There are several restaurants in the area, the most famous of them all is Rothman's Restaurant. Rothman's Restaurant has undergone several ownerships over the years. It was owned and started several years ago by the Rothman's family. Gloria O'rourke, one of the Rothman's children was a past editor of the Oyster Bay Guardian, our local newspaper, and she had fond memories of the Rothman's Restaurant. At some point, Burt Bacharach, the singer, owned the Restaurant and also the East Norwich Inn behind it. Small restaurants came into being few years later. East Norwich has three shopping areas, two on Route 106 and one on Route 25A. East Norwich belongs to Oyster Bay-East Norwich school district. My office, Century 21-Laffey Associates is prominently located at the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A across the Rothman's Restaurant.
