Are "FREE" Credit Reports Really Free?

Yes! And no! It just depends on what "free" site you get it from.

You can go to annualcreditreport.com to get a free copy of your credit report from each of the three bureaus once a year. The positive thing is that you do not have to get them all at one time; you can order one every 4 months and be able to check the accuracy of your reports year-round at no charge.

There are other reasons to use this service. First, it is monitored by the Federal Trade Commission and mandated by the government to ensure that everyone has access to their credit report. Second, it really is free of charge and there are no strings attached.

That's funny because I was just online earlier today doing just that. Just remind people though that it doesn't give you your credit SCORE for free! And if you have done it in previous years WRITE DOWN YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD and secret answer otherwise you end up locking yourself out because even a 2 years later it still has you as a user.. Found that part out today as well! Good thing I have a good memory.

the free credit report thing, unless through the one you mentioned is just a way to harvest your info for advertisers.

Your tip about getting a report from a different credit bureau every four months is one that I picked up on as soon as the annual free credit report law went into effect. If one hasn't had an issue with identify theft, or anything else problematic like that, it's a great way to monitor one's credit.
