Right VERSUS Left

IF ONLY MY RIGHT BRAIN WOULD SPEAK TO MY LEFT BRAIN......

I would feel so much better if my right brain would play nicely with my left brain.  I find that I am getting busier and busier and my piles keep getting bigger and bigger. I have receipts pilling up and shipments coming in and more phone calls! At times I want to hide.  Don't get me wrong I am so grateful and this is so exciting.  My artistic side is in HEAVEN my analytical side is screaming for some order.   It is bad enough that at night when I am so tired, I come into my office look at the piles (nice piles in beautiful boxes but STILL piles none the less) and I promise them..... "I will get you tomorrow". Tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes and the piles are still there.

Do I hire an organizer? Oh dear! That would mean I have lost all control.  Have I?

Do I hire someone? Then I run the risk of being responsible for someone else's income.  That alone puts me in a sheer panic.

I could not sleep at all the other night because my husband had moved our laundry basket to the end of our bed to improve access to the bathroom he was remodeling.  I swear it was staring at me.

My pile of receipts is horrifying. The calls come in more frequently every day and I known by name at my local Pier 1.  (They joked the other day that one of the girls was running out to pick up lunch - did I want anything?)

Like you I am simultaneously elated and thinking of crawling into my closet for a few days (and it really isn't big enough for that). I will figure it out someday.  But not tomorrow, I am going to Ikea....

Follow after me:

1) Keep the receipts in a box in case of an audit, but hide the box far far away. (or just toss them altogether).

Instead open a NEW credit card that is 100% just for business. Nothing else. Get the kind that will give you ONE year end statement that will breakdown all your expenses into GAS, Travel, Food, supplies etc. That way you can give it to your accountant at the end of the year. Be VERY strict with yourself. Do not make ONE non-business charge on this card and do not "push it." Some people "when in doubt" will add it, I don't.

2)  Have everything AUTOcharge and get overdraft protection on your checking account. Never pay a bill again. It should a) go straight to your credit card and if they don't allow that, then straight to your bank account. You will have to leave a little extra cushion in your account, but it is worth it.

3) Do informal invoices. No more fancy PDFs etc. Just email them with a "You owe me $400" and that be that.

4) If you really wanna get high tech, get your workers on a FREE paypal system. You can then pay them via text messaging right there on the spot!! Ok, that might be too high tech.

Oh my, I must be organized!  As soon as I get home from a shopping trip I enter my expenses in my computer.  I have a general cash flow program so I can keep track of itemized expenses and income.  It calculates and immediately tells me how much in the hole I am this week!  All receipts go into a file for taxes, just in case.  When I receive a check I immediately enter it as income.  I have a file for each client, a copy of their check, any invoices, contract, inventory list, pictures, anything that pertains to that client only.
