Don't You Dare Throw Those Boxes Away!

Bury Those Boxes!

We've been enjoying an excess of "liquid sunshine" these last couple of days as a massive nor'easter rolls up the Atlantic coast. Good! Just what my yard needs after the cleanup.

          mulch in the garden

A couple of days ago it was beautiful cool, sunny weather, perfect for getting the yard in shape. The lawn was cleaned up, weeded, and the trees and garden beds were mulched to keep the weeds away. I thought about all the people who were doing the same thing, getting the outside of their home ready and raising the curb appeal.

Here's a tip we can pass on to our clients who are moving: Did you know that cardboard boxes - plain, without lots of advertising and printing on them - can be placed around your garden, shrubs, and trees, then covered with mulch? In the two years it takes for the cardboard to breakdown...no weeds. Instead of throwing out those empty moving cartons, put them in the garden for another way to recycle.  Just think of it as an easy way to go green.cardboard box

Even though I'm soaking wet from taking pictures in the rain, I'm glad to be splashing in Baltimore's special spring "sunshine."

The rains finally stopped and the fierce winds are  dying down. My yard needs cleaning again from the "natural pruning'' of the heavy rain and high winds.

Excellent tips Miss Margaret! And newspapers will do the same thing, the print will kill weeds.

Hi Margaret - I had never heard this before about cardboard.  Interesting re-use of cardboard, and one I'll have to try this spring myself.  Thanks for sharing this tip!

Very interesting ideas, ladies.  This is news to me (pardon the pun, Dena :-), but sounds like it is worth a try.

Still waiting for all the snow to melt. . .

Nice tip Margaret,

I've used carpet.  It is great for killing off grass prior to planting a bed.  I have even moved the carpet, till it rotted down, when it became mulch.

Dena, Good use of newspapers.

Ann, I actually heard about this from a friend who moved not too long ago. And this was how she was using those packing boxes.

Stephan, Give it a try.

janeAnne, Another good remedy.

Maggie and Ray, You are welcome.

Guy, Much better than putting the carpet in the land fill.
