Does a slow market breed a lazy agent?

Real Estate Agent with Your Paradise Group

I am just beginning to wonder if it is just me or are there others who have found that in this slower market many agents are getting slower as well?  Living and working in a resort/vacation destination along the Emerald Coast of Northwest Florida, we have a lot of properties that are also on vacation rental programs.  I am amazed at how many agents I have contacted to show only to be told by the listing agent that I need to contact the rental office or the seller direct to see if the property is available to show.  Do I just have really high expectations or do I just seem to give exceptional service to my own customers?  Whenever I have one of these type of properties, I get their name and number and I will personally contact the appropriate party to check on availability, and then report back to the agent wishing to show.  Tell me am I alone?  I could possibly understand it if the crazed market of a few years back was still with us and everyone was running like mad to write contracts, but I don't think everyone is THAT busy.  Am I alone on this?

Lisa, Great Post!  I have found, when going into Real Estate offices, that about 80% of the agents aren't even coming in any more!  I have one office that I work with the producers in it and the broker there goes NUTS that so many agents don't come in and don't come to any of the training classes that I do there.  His biggest comment is: "It's always the producers that are at these classes...why can't the people that aren't producing get the fact that being here and getting educated is WHY they are still producing?"

I think that the negativity they are hearing has taken over and they feel like nothing will help.

In the case of the listing agents you are referring to, they, too, are ate up with the negativity and figure that even if you show the property, the prospect probably won't buy it so why waste their time.  I don't get it!

Have fun at NAR!!!!

Hi Lisa,

Great post.  Good customer service skills like you offer to your clients will bring you to the top of the pack in the market.  Keep up the good work.  I too go out of my way, but many other agents do not.  Perhaps, because they are busy working another job to make ends meet?

As I listing agent I maintain a record of all showings, including: date, showing agent's name, and feedback.  Consequently, it is essential to be in the "showing loop."  The sellers should be kept abreast of the showing history, and this segues nicely into preparing the seller for price adjustments.  Also, an essential component of this business is building relationships between the consumers as well as other real estate professionals. Communicating with other agents is vital in order to survive and thrive in today's market.
