Sometimes it takes an out-of-towner

Last night, at our house we had company from out of town.  It's always nice to get together with people who have never been to this area before (Pinehurst, NC) because we get to show them around.  We walked around downtown before dinner and I found stores and places that I didn't realize were here.  After listing the many perks of the area, (43 golf courses within 15 miles, great restaurants, horse country, safety, great people, and  unique shops) I found myself remembering all the things I love about living here.

No matter how large of a city you live in, I encourage you to 'be a tourist' from time to time.  There are undoubtedly great places you haven't been before.  I have a greater appreciation of Pinehurst, and I am excited to check out some new places, just down the street.  There are usually some great local websites that list unique places to go and things to do if walking around isn't appealing or feasible.

Get out there and enjoy your town!

Serena:  That really is a great idea.  I have found that newly relocated folks when moving in find out about lots of really cool things about various areas that have become sort of invisible to those of us who have lived here for years.  The psychological term for that is "sensory adaptation."  For us who live here... the cool things just blend in with everything else.  For newcomers... those same things "stand out."  Good post... good ideas... thanks for sharing.

Interesting Karen, I never knew that was the term for it.  I am a firm believer though that you should get out in your own local areas and BE A TOURIST!  You nailed it, Serena!

Serena,

My husband and I wake up some lazy Sunday mornings thinking, "what we can we do today?" We end up being tourists in our own town...there is so much to do in Central Florida...you don't have to drive far...why do you think people come to visit so often...it's fun to go out, take in the sights, have a nice lunch out, and return home in time for FOOTBALL!!!

Funny, I've lived in the DFW/North Texas area since '75.  I never went to the infamous "School Book Depository", never went to Billy Bobs, never went to Southfork Ranch (of JR Ewing fame), until people from out of town came in and wanted us to take them there.

It was always "no big deal" until the "tourists" made it so.  Fresh eyes on any market can bring out the uniqueness of an area.

Good idea, thanks for reminding me.

My wife and I get to be tourists today. We are going to the reopened American Museum of American History at the Mall in Washington DC. We are so fortunate to live just 15 minutes away in Alexandria. So we will be tourists in our home town as you suggest. I have loved being a tourist in your home town of Pinehurst. Now if I could just find those golf balls I lost there...

Michael- Yeah we have lost many of our golf balls here- it's easy to do with 43 courses in the area!  You are not alone.  :)
