Today (Saturday 11/8) is a day off for my wife and I. We are joining 2 other couples and going on a self guided tour of the 3 wineries located within Botetourt County.
Our first stop will be Virginia Mountain Vineyards located near Fincastle a few miles off route 220. Deena and I have been there once before and met the owner/winemaker. We were happpy with their wine selection and quality, especially the reds. The land is beautiful and a view of the Peaks of Otter is offered. Today they are having a wine/cheese pairing event, but we'll just be swinging by for a taste and then off to the next stop.
The second whistle blows when we arrive at Blue Ridge Vinyards located on the north side of the James River off rt 43. I must say that I am ashamed to have driven past their sign at least a hundred times in recent years without stopping. Always cruising along enjoying the ride or anxious to wet a line-never with wine on my mind! That changes today. I am told they have a beautiful setting as well.
Our final stop will be one much anticipated by one couple in our group who have been there several times and really enjoy their wines and atmosphere. Fincastle Winery, located off rt 11 closer to Troutville than Fincastle will end our trip for today.
I will report back with our general opinions on each winery, each experience. And don't worry, we have a designated driver!
