If You Have an Aggressive Dog, PLEASE Keep it on a Leash While on the Fullerton Loop

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential California Realty

One of the many things I love about Fullerton is the feeling of open space when on the Fullerton Loop; a series of trails that runs through Fullerton.  You will find horses, runners, mountain bikers and DOGS!

I love running my dog up and down the hills and through the trails and trust me, she loves it too!  But, it was quite a different story today.

While we were coming down one of the hills, a dog ran aggressively towards us, barking, growling and snapping.  All I saw was teeth and I was so scared that it was going to bite my dog that I immediately thew my arms up and screamed, "NO, NO, NO!" (This is a coyote trick that my husband taught me, get bigger and louder than the predator). I am known to have a loud voice so I think I scared it!

The dog ran back down the hill and joined three other big dogs roaming with their mom trailing behind on her cell phone.  She glanced over and kept walking.

Well, to say the least I was annoyed and my heart was racing, that dog had really scared me! The lady went the way I was planning to go on the trail so I went another.  As I was coming around, the corner, who do I see again?  The aggressive dog charging after us once again!

As I screamed at the dog, the lady comes around on her cell phone and keeps on chatting.  Well, this time, I couldn't let it go and yelled, "WHY DON'T YOU HANG UP YOUR PHONE AND CONTROL YOUR DOG?".  She didn't even pull her phone away from her ear when she said, "My dog isn't doing anything".

Her irresponsibliy with her dog really got me that time and a few choice words were exchanged.  I'll admit it was heated and I was upset that this obviously aggressive dog is charging other dogs and she was not taking it seriously.  This dog should have been on a leash.  Why did she think it was no big deal?

I am a dog lover but know a lot of my friends and clients are not.  I have had clients that are afraid to step foot in a yard if they see a dog dish and friends that have been bitten.  We all love the Fullerton Loop but it is scary enough having to watch out for snakes and coyotes; an aggressive dog should not be on that list.katie swimming

On a more positive note, the Fullerton Loop is really beautiful this time of year! The sky was so blue and the weather was crisp and perfect for a jog on the trail.  Lots of people aren't really sure where to find it so check out my other blogs on the Fullerton Loop for more information.

Oh, and My Katie Girl is fine, she came on home and jumped in the pool like she always does after a good run.

Cristal - Did you hear what Barney, the President's dog did to the reporter yesterday?  Barney's handler said it was ok to pet Barney, but Barney was having none of it, and bit him!  I think Barney is suffering from "short-timer" syndrome at the White House :-)

Hi Cristal!

There are lots of reasons to control your pets.  I use to run my dogs loose in the park.  They truly are harmless and their only issue is that they won't roam far enough away from me! They don't like visiting other dogs or people, so they steer clear of others.

My habit of letting them run loose changed when, one day, I had them sitting to cross the street.  I looked both ways of a 4-way stop, all cars were stopped, so I gave them the go-ahead to cross.  At that exact moment, unbelievably, one of the cars decided to go when my dogs were halfway across the street.  Harley and the car basically hit each other. Harley took off at a dead panic run, with me chasing her and my other dog, Porsche chasing me.  The long story short, I lost sight of her and half an hour later, with all of my family searching forher, got a call that she had been hit AGAIN, was ok and they told me where she was.  Fortunately, I brought her to the vet and other than some sore feet and muscles, she was ok. It was a miracle, but I will never test it again. My dogs are on  a leash for their own protection!

That would have scared me BIG time!  My dogs are big but they stay on leashes - I have had that happen to us and the owners of the other dogs just have this look of "What?" in their eyes.  What?  Control your dog!

Hi Cristal.  I admire you for saying something to the woman.  I cringed a couple of weeks ago while walking my pooches @ a woman who was yelling @ her kid then turned the anger on her dog because she tripped over him.  She was definitely having a bad day.  My blood started boiling and I opened my mouth to yell @ her and my boyfriend told me to keep cool & stay out of it.  I wish I had said something like you did.

Your Katie girl looks like loads of fun!  Cooling herself off in the pool - she's no fool!  KM

Chris - Thanks, her lack of concern over an aggressive dog really got to me but the dog didn't hurt us so it is fine.  I hope the next person is as lucky for her sake!

Chris - The loop is AWESOME.  We work a lot too but are lucky that Katie gets to go to work every day with my husband.  She is the most emotional dog ever and if she has to stay home, she pouts something aweful!

Myrl - I did hear that!  He is going out but he sure isn't going to do it without a fight!

Paula, that is so scary!  I am so glad your dog is ok!  I am guilty of letting katie go on the loop, it is very rural but I am doing it less and less.

Leesa - You nailed it!  I am ashamed to admit that it got ugly though.

Kristin - It sure sounds like a bad day.  I lost it because maybe she knew her dog wouldn't hurt us but there is no way for others to know that!  This dog looked Rabid!  She just could not get that there was a problem!  I was so mad!

Katie Girl looks like an angel!  Shame on the aggressive dog and the owner.  A little common sense would go a long way.  I am glad no one got hurt.  This could have ended a lot differently.

I can just see you doing that Cristal!! :) Good for you! I have a story of my own. My daughter Cat was taking our dog Apple for a walk. We always carry her on a leash because you just never know, as much as they might be obedient and all anything can trigger them, PLUS Apple is a huge dog and if you want to hold her back and she has nothing on her to grab onto her its virtually impossible to do so. Anyways, they were about 5 blocks from home when Cat says that two chihuahuas came charging after them, NOT ON A LEASH, and started snapping at Apple. Well at first Apple just pushed them but when they came back at her, she grabbed one of them in her mouth and flung them. Well they didnt learn and came back after them, the whole time my poor daughter is yelling at all the dogs to stop and no one is stopping and the owner of is a little old lady and isnt doing anything to control the dogs either. Well after Apple grabbed the other dog in its mouth and shook it a few times they finally went back from where they came from. Apple didnt bite them just gave them a scare.

Then my daughters friend who has a one year old husky was going on a walk with her Dad and all of the sudden this pit bull came outta no where and attacked her. Again, no leash and no owner in site. Poor puppy was in the Animal Hospital and couldnt move for days because of her injuries.

I dont get why people let dogs roam, I am from NY and its just known that you put your dog on a leash and pick up after them.

Cristal, good for you sticking up for yourself and dog. I hate it when I'm walking my dog and she is doing her best to behave and other dogs are running loose creating a problem.

Melody, it is really not the dog's fault but the "mom" who really thought there was nothing wrong with what was happening was the problem! BTW, the picuture of your dogs on your blog are so cute!

Whoa Yanne, that is crazy!  Poor Apple, at some point it sounded like she had to do something. Poor Cat, I would have just about been in tears trying to deal with all those dogs!  A similar thing happend the other day with little dogs coming after us in the street. The owner just looked annoyed like it was our fault for walking by!  Very cool that stopped by to comment on my blog!  Thanks!

Robin, exactly!  You know that Katie would love to run wild with no rules but she was trying hard to be to be good too!

Hi Cristal - I admire you for confronting that irresponsible dog owner.  I imagine it was quite a scene! :)

If you are a dog lover and you were frightened, think how terrified someone that isn't would be.

Cristal-

Good for you girl !  Saying something to her.

Maybe someone should put her on a leash and throw away her phone so she can see what havoc she is causing in such a beautiful place!

Cristal....we had a bad experience at the Marina....we were on our boat with our dogs and we heard the most awful noise....a dog screeching....I couldn't take it and ran up to the dock entrance where it was occurring....a pack of pit bulls (there were three but only two were on the small blue hound) that were running with their owner attached smaller blue hound dog that was with his owner and pulled the dog apart....it was awful....the dog was badly hurt and the owner hysterical....he and I fought the dogs off physically....I took both arms and locked my fists together to slam the dog in the middle of his spine so that he would release the poor little dog by her muzzle and it broke his hold....the other dog let loose when the dog I hit let go. They ran to their owner. She screamed at us that her dogs did nothing wrong. The police were called and her dogs were quarantined. I can't tell you how terrible it was and it left me very wary and alert when I am taking my dog(s) for a walk....I am defensive and always carry a cane that is quite effective if need be. I'm glad it was not worse for you. Remember and be prepared in the future. You should carry an effective item that can help you break the back of any animal that attacks you or your dog. That poor young man was so distraught. I am always good in situations and think quick on my feet. All I could think of was "what if this was one of my puppies"? It taught me to be prepared to protect myself and my puppies.

oh, that would have seriously pissed me off! people are so damn stupid it hurts. Dog owners assume everyone loves their smelly, licky, aggressive dirty dog. I for one CAN'T stand going on a listing appt while the dog is licking my knee cap and rubbing his furr all over my black slacks! Especially the dogs that jump on you!

unleashed dogs should come with a $500 fine for the first offense. The second offense, you should be put in jail for 72 hours. The third you should be subjected to no running water in your home for 7 weeks.

I agree, just because I like my pets I never assume anyone else will.  People like this are rude and stupid.

That story had my heart start pounding!  That happened to me and my Boxer "Buzz" who has since passed away :'( I miss him, we walked everyday.   One of the neighbors had a pack of dogs (5) that would charge us, growl and show there teeth!  I had to carry ammonia water in a spray bottle to keep them at bay.  The owner did not care THE CREEP WOULD STAND THERE AND WATCH!   My poor Buzz never hurt a flea...OK well maybe a flea, ha ha,  he was such a good gentle dog.

Greg, hahaha!  WOOF!

Ann, you know, I am sorry to say that it was a scene! :o(

Jeaneane!  Oh my gosh!  That is so scary and I am glad you were there to help!  My husband had to punch a dog in the head that was attacking my dog!  Of course it was leashless and would have ripped Katie to shreds had he not done it!  The lady had the nerve to yell at him.  I am wondering it was the same lady! :o(

Greg, you're the best and I think you are totally right!  Let's  just say that for the sake of a public service, this is the "nice" version of what happend :o)

Chris, EXACTLY!

JoyLynn, how do people think that this is ok?  It is crazy!

Not a real person

I think that any dog, supposedly non-aggressive or not, should be on a leash if there are horses, bikes, and runners nearby. Too much action too quickly, especially by something extremely large like a horse, can cause any dog to become aggressive. The only places dogs can be off leashes is in the yard, at the dog park where only people and other dogs are allowed, and at the vets, and even the vets seem to want them on leashes.

Russel, yes, many times a day, there is LOTS of activity.  I am guilty of letting my girl off once in a while but she always comes back to me and I find that I am doing it less and less because not everyone loves even a friendly dog.

But for pete sake, if she ever ran up and scared someone, I would apologize until the cows came home, not look at the person like they were the problem!
