Thoughts on Va Tech

As a kid growing up in Richmond, I have been a fan of Tech sports for years, had family members attend the school, hang with Hokie friends during football season, and even spent time there during college (although I attended VCU). Everyone who says "it" couldn't have happened there is correct. Tech is 40 miles from the nearest city and located in a beautiful Blue Ridge town. It just couldn't happen there.

Well, as it turns out, we're not immune to violence in the Old Dominion.

I now live in Loudoun County, VA (near Washington, DC). Yes, our area is more cosmopolitan and yes, the shooter was from my area - just five miles away. Tragically, my daughter has experienced the loss of no fewer than three friends to shootings in her high school career - two suicides and a murder. Now we have this to ponder.

Now, before we jump to conclusions, I too experienced violence on friends while growing up in "quiet" Richmond in the 1970's. Nearly half of my starting football team in high school was jailed within a few years after graduation - and we were from the "good" side of town. It must not be all the media's fault or the crazed age of the 2000's

One thing about living 40+ years is you gain perspective and mine is simply, it's not where you're from or what you are, it's about giving your kids real attention. They need genuine nurturing, love, caring guidance and for parents to listen - just listen. Don't try to fix, just listen.

Above all, they need a basis in faith. I encourage everyone to sit down and really get to know their children as people, not just kids that run you nuts (even though you love them dearly). Get them to turn off the cell phones, IPODS, computers and TVs so you can all sit and talk j-- just ten minutes a day. Go for a walk in the woods. Yes, you are the parent and your word is not be trivialized, but kids need it all and you can give it to them, no matter how busy you are.

Brett, so true.  We've allowed an entire generation to hide behind technology and electronics and they don't know as a group how to deal with emotions, like this shooter kid.  Our kids need us to be available and to pull them off of their toys for real connections.

This was one of the saddest things imaginable. My wife and I do things very differently with our children. I definitely think it will pay off in the long run.

And now even more sad when you see the taped message that terribly troubled man left for us on tape. It's so easy to think he was just plain evil, but he was a child of God too. So very sad...

Hey Brett:

As a real estate partner of mine you know that my son was accepted to VA Tech and very excited to go.  We were there touring the college just one week to the day of this horrible, horrible tragedy.  I was downtown on that Monday driving in my car to an appointment listing to FoxNews radio when I heard the breaking news.  I had the same horrible feeling I had on September 11th.  All I could do was break down in tears.  Those poor kids....their poor families.  I could not believe that it was actually happening.  My first gut reaction was to tell my son that he was not going to attend VA Tech after this tragedy and I did so upon his arrival home from school.  The whole next two days I was glued to the TV and/or the radio following the story.  Once my emotions calmed down I was able to put things into perspective and told my son that if this was the school he wanted to go to then he should go.  Unfortunately in today's world this kind of tragedy happens all too often and can happen anywhere to any of us.  My son visited VA Tech again on the Sunday following the shooting.  When he came home he was absolutely sure that is where he wants to be.  The wonderful people of VA Tech, students, families and faculty were all there pulling together as one.  His heart was touched and he felt like he belongs there.  I am proud to say that he is now, or will be in the fall, a part of the proud, healing Hokie family and I couldn't be happier.  We need to pray for the families including the family of the shooter.  Oh how they must feel.  Not only did they lose a son but that son was responsible for so much heartache.  Loving our children, our family and keeping the faith is the most important thing there is!
