Which event should I enter for the Seattle Marathon?

I am going to register for the Seattle Marathon, but I am in a quandry which event?  I am not ready for the full running marathon for sure.  There is also a full marathon walk, half marathon walk and a half marathon run.  I know I can walk a half marathon since I ran and walked one this morning.  I also know that by Nov 30th I will not be ready to run one all the way ( maybe never will be able to with my knees) Walking a full marathon is past where I will be for milage at that point in time, and I don't really want to walk the whole thing, so....Not sure what I should do.  My husband says I should enter the half running one, they will not kick me off the course for walking part of the way.  I think maybe he is right.  I am suddenly just pretty intimidated by the idea of people who can run the whole way and me walking along....

So any way for those of you who are runners I would love an opinion.  I started training in the last week of August of this year.  I run about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way and walk the rest when I train. I completed a half marathon and just a tad bit more yesterday morning. ( both walking and running)  I need to find out if a certain time is required for the Seattle Marathon, I think that will help too.  I have made almost all of my training days although sometimes one day has been substituted with another ( took a rest day on a scheduled run day and ran on a scheduled rest day)

If you run ( particularly the Seattle marathon) I would like your opinion.

Hi Anna,

I agree with your husband. I would guess that the running community will not shun you for walking part of the marathon!  Great job with your training! Participating in a marathon is quite a feat!

Don't forget me if you learn of anyone moving to "The OC!"

Anna,  Basically it comes down to your expected finish time.  You will see many people walking at different points especially during the last 10 miles.   I'd look at results from last year and see how long it took the back of the pack to finish without being removed from the course. I recently did Hartford and I think the time limit there was 6 hours.  After reading your post the other day it didn't seem like you took the training very seriously, tough to judge your completion time if you stop to do laundry during the run.  Maybe Run the Half this time and do the full in June...

Thanks for the feed back so far....yes a little unconventional doing a load of laundry during training, but if I have to stop to use the "facilities" anyway the laundry is only about 30 seconds of time.  I am looking more for finishing a certain amount of distance rather than in a certain time frame.  Right now a mile takes me about 13.6 minutes as far as I can figure, I do not have a stop watch, only a cell phone.  I have no plans to do the full marathon run now, too early in training, just trying to figure out if I want to do the full marathon walk or 1/2 marathon run ( in my case/walk)  Dan, it's funny that my mentioned the fact that many are walking in the last 10 miles, I am sure that will be the case for me too, but I really find that the longer I go, I am more able to run for longer and longer periods of time. I really need to walk the first 1-2 miles if I run them first I have real trouble, but if I walk and then after the first mile or so run I can spend so much more of my mileage at a run.  ( not sure why that is, just true, the longer I go so far the more effortless it is) my only real concern at this point is my knees, they are a bit of an issue.

Run the 1/2 marathon.  Run a mile and walk a mile and follow the sequence to the finish.  Don't worry about what other runners are doing.  You are not racing them.  You are competing against self-imposed limitations and that should be your focus.  Focus on what you can do and not what other runners think you should do.

Have a great time and reward yourself after you finish the race!

Walking is so much easier on the knees I'd go for the full walk if you know you can do that.  Take care of your body... you may need it for a long long time to come.
