If I had a Dollar...

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Benrud Realty

I'm sure agents out there have said the same thing as me; "If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me how the market is".

This past weekend my husband and I went out to dinner with some friends.  These friends own a small local car company and I have sold one of their houses for them in the past couple years.  Of course discussion eventually got around to the current housing market.  The housing market here in the Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls area is slow but has not come to a grinding halt like in other parts of the country.  The market is still steady and houses still being bought and sold.  I've still been busy and so have all the other agents in our office.  I've also spoken with local appraisers and home inspectors and they are just as busy, if not busier, than at this time last year.

Well, these friends of ours were just amazed that I would describe the market as anything other than horrible!  They actually changed the conversation when it became apparant that I was not going to go off on a rant about the current market and economy.

Well, this is just my own private rant about that never ending question that we all get.  I think we should get part of the bail-out money just for answering the question time and time again!

Good luck and best wishes to all out there today!

Tina,

While it's often irritating to hear the same question over and over, consider it an honor that they have looked to you as a resource (although they are likely just looking for confirmation) and then continue to be upbeat (which throws them a big curve). Great. :)

Tina,

We ACTUALLY can get a DOLLAR every time someone asks that question. As a matter of fact, we have the potential to get hundreds, even thousands.

It is OUR answers that will guide and direct our local markets!! See that question as an opportunity!!!!

Steve - Yes, I do get a certain thrill at the look on their face when I tell them that the market is still doing very well.  I think a lot of people prefer to believe the "doom and gloom" rather than the good news!

Hello from Green Bay.  Thing are the same in the northeastern part of the state.  I get the "market" question all the time.  We here still have people buying and selling homes.   We have quite a few large employers and, of course the Packers, so we are still managing to do fairly well.

Have a great Monday and keep all the snow out there by you if you can.  I haven't blown out the candle in my pumpkin yet!

Take care.

With the current market you could have turned the question around to How is the Car Dealership doing now?  The media says sales are in the dumps?  Sometimes we need to remind folks that sales are LOCAL, be it real estate or car sales.

At least they are remembering that you are in real estate. Nothing can be worse then someone not knowing that you are a real estate agent. Considering it an honor to be asked that question. I was asked numerous times over this weekend as well. I'm glad they are asking me--I always want to be their source of info.

I was in line at the grocery store... someone asked the question and I told them the price of homes in a certain area. Another person in line asked for a business card- we're going out there to look this week. So... I love the question. :-)

I say, "Well that depends, are you thinking of buying, selling, investing or renting?"  This open ended approach I learned from Tom Ferry and it works wonders.  If you say, "oh its a great time for buyers!"  If that person was thinking of selling you are already out of repoire with them.  This way they tell you exactly what they need rather than you putting your own thoughts on the market onto them.

How you choose to answer that question speaks about you. The market is what you make it!

Chuck and Dave - It is fun to turn this questions into business.  This couple recently hired a new sales manager who is not from this area and my first question was "Has he bought a house yet?"

Gail - My husband actually worked for these people for 5 years as their service manager so I find it hard to rub it in to them about the slow sales.  They know their dealership is suffering from the economy!  I am actually trying to sell them an alternative business in the area that is up for sale.
