A few years back I listed a glorious old home in the Soulard area of St. Louis. This home had originally been a doctors residence when it was built back in the 1880's??. To say that it was a solid house was an understatement . Legend had it that a tornado had hit it and bounced off. The foundation on this thing was something like 36 inches wide!
Over the years the house had been "remodeled" several times in the various styles du jour that were popular. These "remodels" included putting in a suspended ceiling, painting the wood work, bricking up windows and a red and the biggest shag carpet that I had ever seen.
We got a contract on the home fairly quickly and that freed up the sellers to go look for another home. After having owned a home that was over 100 years old and huge, they wanted a smaller more modern house. I showed them homes in the Arnold, MO area and one day we walked into a home that (and I kid you not) Red and good vertical striped wall paper, Black and red shag carpet and a velvet print of a matador above the mantel.
I turned to my clients and was about to say, "Oh MY GOD!" when I saw the look of rapture on their faces. They LOVED it! We wrote on it and closed several weeks later.
The lesson here, my taste and your taste are not the tastes of the buyers and the buyer's tastes are what matters!
**Note: I got the idea for this post from Mary Pope-Handy, What's the Weirdest Thing You Ever Saw In A Home.
