Let us remember, and let us never forget

This is a day that is important to every American, Canadian, British citizen, soldier, and more. It is a day when we give our respect and whole heart of appreciation to the men and woman of the armed forces, the allied forces, and our wonderful freedom that allows a simple person like me to sit here and write this post without the fear and tribulations that some would have to endure for a life time. Many countries have paid a dear price to have their freedom. Being an American citizen, I am one for many reasons that will never take this day for granted because of those who gave to me so unselfishly, and those that do every day.

I am so fortunate I cannot even begin to tell you how thankful, and proud I am, to be alive, and my flag.I belive I will take sometime this glorious day and visit my friends that taking their much deserved rest

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
T hey never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

Tom,

This is a beautiful post and I reread it again just now, even though I had read it yesterday too, I was even more touched by it today.
I remember last year I wrote about my great great Uncle Tom Smith who died in the first world war at the battle for Passchendaele  (I saw the movie that was made about that battle a few weeks ago). He was only 27 and had volunteered to go and fight for our freedom.

Your post reminded me once more of the ultimate sacrifice so many of these, often very young, men and women have made so that the world can be a safer and more peaceful place. Thank you for writing it and doing it in your own very heartfelt and genuine way.

Jo

Tom - This is a good post.  We often forget the real meaning of these Holidays.  We get wrapped up on the sale at Macy's or a day off from work...
