Another Southern Utah Veteran......

I know that I spent some time on a blog about Veteran's the other day, but I was touched as I looked at an old photograph of my uncle Dale Cannon in his uniform prior to shipping of to Europe in World War II.  He recieved a Purple Heart with three clusters.  He fought in North Africa, Normandy, and the last time at the Battle of the Bulge and many places in between. The wounds that he recieved at the Battle of the Bulge required stateside surgery and the war ended while he recovered.

I know that he was one of the lucky ones, he told me so often.  He was lucky because he came home, and there were so many that didn't.

My Uncle is the one on the right, the one in the middle is his cousin Mel Behunin, and I don't know who the man on the left is.

When I was around 12 years old there was a Neo Nazi march planned for Skokie, Ill..  I remember it like it was yesterday watching the news as they interviewed a resident of Skokie who had survived the Death Camps of World War II in Nazi Germany.  My uncle sat on the edge of his easy chair as this man told of losing his loved ones and the pain that this march was bringing back to him.

The report then cut away to interview the head of the Neo Nazi party planning the march.  My Uncle got out of his chair and said, no, not in my house.  Better men than that S.O.B died because some other S.O.B thought like that once; and I will be damned if I will listen to it in my house.  The emotion was so electric that you could cut it with a knife.  I think for the first time in my life, I understood what the war meant to him.

Like many Veterans, he didn't talk a lot about the War.  He acknowledged that he had gone and would answer direct questions, but he didn't brag, nor unless prodded bring it up.  He never claimed to be a hero mainly because in his words: "I came home, the heroes didn't."  In his mind he may not have been a hero, but to me he was and still is.  Thank you, All of you.!
